i was on my second prov , which has now expired ,
long story as to why i have had two provis and got nowhere - i am also 48 and never needed to drive - now i do .

i had completed some lessons with a great instructor who sadly passed away mid learning , i wasnt ready and the licsense is dead over two years now
my third application for a provis was rejected as it needs proof of test attempt .
i was not ready at the time to sit.

my circumstances have changed and i wish to go back to learning and sit the test - but to get the 3rd provis

do i have to do the test ( i will fail bad - i know this )
or is there another way ?

    any help greatly
    appreciated

Slight correction. You can apply for you permit qith the letter of confirmation. This comes long before the appointment letter. Also, if you need more driving time you can ask not to be given a test before a certain date or postpone the first date given. Waiting times are about two + months.

I'm in a similar situation to the OP.

When I am applying to take the test online can I use the driver number on my current provisional license (It's out of date) and if not, how do I go about getting a current one, given that to renew my provisional license I need to have a driving test booked?

Not sure if others have had problems, but I applied for the test online using an expired 2nd provisional without issue.
I actually found them very accommodating on the phone. Unfortunately I had to cancel the test just before xmas due to the death of a friend.
I rang up to explain that I wouldn't be taking the test and it wasn't for work or illness reasons. I expected to lose the fee and have to reapply as these are the two reasons specified for approval of late cancellations, but figured it was the decent thing to let them know. Not only was I sympathized with, my date was rebooked without question.
Say what you want about some services in this country, but I actually found that cheered me up.
