Out of interest, how much did you spend this year on maintaining your car (excluding petrol)? I totaled up my maintenance/mod costs for 2010, it ain't pretty. All OEM parts with discounts of about 30% included and zero labour costs.

    2000 BMW 728i

€412 - x4 brake discs, x8 pads, screws and sensors
€85 - oil change and filter
    €75 - thermostat
€850 - tyres installed and tracked
€1500 - boston acoustics audio install
    €200 - roadhawk camera system
    €50 - bm24 radio module
    €175 - heated seat install
    €700 - 16:9 display and MK4 navigation
    €100 - miscellaneous tools

    €1200 - motor tax
    €1200 - insurance

    Total: €6547

And I know i'm forgetting something! :pac:

Theres plenty about on here, what did you spend?

Are you trying to depress me?

I refuse to keep track of my spending because I'd probably hold back if I knew what it was really costing me. In a couple of weeks I go from mid to late 20's so I better do it while I'm still youngish!

Your insurance is crazy money, what age are you? or have you had a crazy accident involving nuns and a Corola?

Well I mean extras, maintenance etc. Insurance has come down €350 this year, i'm not driving long. I only had mine for sale for a few weeks, UK seller sold the car I wanted to replace it with.

I usually don't answer these kind of post, but make an exception! Where did you get 6547E on maintenance/mod?
1200+1200??? motor tax and insurance are not car maintenance/mod payments...

€412 - x4 brake discs, x8 pads, screws and sensors
€85 - oil change and filter
    €75 - thermostat

    that is your maintenance...

€1500 - boston acoustics audio install
    €200 - roadhawk camera system
    €50 - bm24 radio module
    €175 - heated seat install
    €700 - 16:9 display and MK4 navigation
    €100 - miscellaneous tools

mods, that are pretty! I would not say they're not, if I paid for them...
And for a/v mods it is not a lot of money, but for 00reg'd car, it is a lot!

Finally, if I hide 20000E worth swiss watch in my car, can I call it maintenance/mod charge?

No offence my friend, the questions/topic in the forum didn't match the expectations...

    Read the thread title.

Also. I see OEM as anything offered as standard by a manufacturer. So an Alpine audio system could very well be!

If OP separated brake pads/oil costs etc I wouldn't say a word. But you were right that what we spent on the car was more important, so let it be:

    Fiat Bravo, 1.2, 2000:

full service (incl. spark plugs) + brake pads = 249E
brake lines (incl. fresh fluid) = 170E
    gearbox, 2nd hand from UK - 70E + 100E labour (cheapest option)
    Sony cd/radio - 99E
    4x new tyres( Barum) - 170E
Some suspension work - 120E total
    Tracking - 45E

Sold in December to family member for 300E - bought 14 months before for 1100E... don't even want to do the Math...

Bought the 2000 Scenic for 1600, did full service, no issues at all. And who said french cars are bad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

Sold a car mid year, so i had two NCT's and a good bit of work to be done on the new car.
I'd say about 1k on maintenance and parts. Considering the new car cost €500, thats a lot for one year:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,272 ✭✭✭✭Max Power1

    1996 Mk IV Fiesta

€40 - New passenger side mirror
    €100 annual service
    €330 Motor Tax
    €1200 Insurance
    €95 2 new tires

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭OldmanMondeo

    2008 1.8TDCi Mondeo

    Tax €275, done 3 x 3months @ €95
    Insurance€ 420
    Service €180

Due 4 new tyres, wheel aligment, new rear pads. Reckon €400 should sort all that. Oh and insurance is due again soon, another €400 - €450.

I find this question interesting as I don't think its something people give much time to.

The question is: how much did you spend on your car this year? I see it as being: how much did your car cost you this year?

    For me, this should include

    Depreciation
    Insurance
    Tax
    Petrol
    Maintenance
    Extras

Particularly.....i don't know why you guys don't include depreciation? Its a a huge part of the cost.

Obviously I'm not the OP though.

In total, i reckon I spent about €1000, seeing as I got my car scrapped midway through the year and never replaced it. It was worth feck all anyway, given that it needed a lot of work....hence my decision to scrap it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭rugbyman

Bill, from most of the above examples, and from your own ,depreciation is not really a factor.

    Mine Matiz,(brilliant wee car)

    depreciation ; very little
    insurance 500
    tax 175 or so
tyres ,two 30 (wheels off a scrappy)
    tyres two 80 new
    battery 85 (two years ago)
nct 50 (fail, will cost 250 to sort)
    diagnosis 20
    weld exhaust 30.

have had car 5 years, not much more costs than above over that period.

    regards Rugbyman

    Hi there

in my own case, to be specific i bought my car in 2003 and scrapped in March 2010. I bought it for €13k. Thats depreciation of €1900 per year, more or less, on a straight line basis. Thats more than petrol, tax, insurance put together.

Yes but depreciation isn't money you've spent every year, plus it takes the fun out of this little exercise.

TBH I wouldn't have lost on my car, it's far ahead where it was when I bought it so can I factor in appreciation? :p

This really gives no idea of total running costs. Depreciation €20k+ over 2 years & petrol & €4k per year on fuel.

Why was the window regulator only part funded? Surely a 2 year old Audi should still be under warranty, and a regulator isn't exactly a wear and tear item...

It was 2 years & 4 months. 2 year warranty only. Covered half as good will gesture. Fitted it myself. I think they are doing them now more or less free as failures are very common now.

I spent about 50 cents for text messages to buyers asking about the car and since I sold it at 80e I actually got profit having a car.

Good thing you did not ask how much I spent on the car previous year:)

But seriously this topic have been here before, and I think I have spend about 4k for car per year including everything. Also for both my previous cars, Matiz and S40 Volvo the depreciation was about 50e / month. Matiz was bought for 2300, sold 170e, Volvo bought 850e, sold 80e .

Avensis 2.0 TD. over 26000 miles

    Service x 3 €120
    Starter motor off carina €60
    Wheel trims €45
    2 shocks €160
    Roof aerial €10
    2 tyres €90
    Lidl Bluetooth radio €30
ISO cables for radio €20 :-(

That's it apart from tax (600 odd) insurance, (450) and diesel (3000)

So about 535 on maintanance and 4000 on everything else.

18 cent per mile. Or €87 a week. Work well covers it with mileage though.

Its totally worth it too. I spend far more on the car than I do on rent in a year :D

    03 Focus TDCi, 130,000 miles

    Tax & Insc: €1,000
Oil and Filters: €200 (2x services, 1x fuel and air)
    2x wheel bearings: €60
    Bulbs: €20
    NCT: €50
    4x Tyres: €330

Total: €1660, but at least the car has 4 new tyres and 2 years NCT for that.

In the 5 years and 70,000 miles I have it I think I have lost €6,000 in depreciation and it has cost about €1,800 in repairs (largely for a DMF, Clutch and alternator clutch).

    I'm happy.
