I was working on an excel file. I was creating a new document from it but instead of 'save as' I hit 'save' and then closed out. I want to recover the old version. Anything I can do? So far I've tried the following and nothing worked
    a. system restore
    b. search C drive for *.xlk files (I'm told thats the extension excel files get)
    c. I downloaded a program 'find any file' and searched for that file name.
    d. I downloaded an undelete program called NTFS undelete and searched there.

Anyone any other ideas. About to give up.

You might get lucky if there is an autosave version still on the computer. But it's very unlikely.

For Windows Vista and 7, navigate to C:\Users\(User Name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
    or for Windows XP, C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

and see if there are any files in that folder that you can open with Excel that has your data.

Another option in Windows 7 and Vista is to right-click on the saved file and click on Restore previous versions. If there is a previous version of the file somewhere in a restore or backup it'll display them in that list and you can restore the version that you want.

But apart from those I think your old file is pretty much gone.

Download Excel Viewer and install. You can then read your file and do a copy/paste into any other version.
