    Hello folks

Just wondering has anyone had the experience of buying a classic without a tax book and had to get a replacement after?
I have no idea who the previous owner was as it was sold to me after lying in a warehouse for close to 20 years.
Has anyone found themselves in a similar position?

    Any help appreciated thanks!:)

Get a lost document form (Google RF 134 and it will bring it up online for you) in the Garda station or online maybe and fill out what details you have and get it stamped by the Gardai (if you ask them nicely they might give you the previous owners details if you explain your case, it would help if you know the Garda too) Post it to or call to the motor tax off office with the details and a fee of 12 euros and they'll issue you with the book through the post.

    That sounds fairly straightforward!

the car is not registered to you ,so the above information is incorrect, you will need to make a statuory declaration . the correct form is only available from your tax office by asking for it,you then need to get a main /reputable dealer to verify make ,model chassis no then get a solicitor to witness your declaration,it does not need to be stamped by the guards. The tax office will generally only release the paper if you tax the vehicle,

    I see,

Its something i wanted to make sure was possible before money was spent on it. The worst situation would be to restore and find out its impossible to put on the road.

    Info much appreciated.

Dutchcat is right. You fill an RF134, but also have to get a Statutory declaration form signed before a Peace Commissioner etc and a Main dealer/Garage have to stamp the same form to certify the chassis number.

Does the vehicle have to be roadworthy, as in restored and driving before this is done or can it be done while working on it?
Now that I know its possible to get a taxbook it wouldn't matter as much, I could just wait until i've it on the road i suppose.

This way has worked for me on at least three occasions without me being the registered owner.

Have a similar, but different, problem with a vehicle here.

We have the tax book...but previous owner hasn't signed it...he passed on 2 years ago.

    Any suggestions?

same thing as above you've got to get a comissioner of oaths or solicitor to sign off on the same form as you would if you needed a replacement book sent into your name when you aren't on the book already. You may need proof of his death though or at least a statement from a relative or something. I cant rememebr the exact form of fthe top of my head but the tax office will know the right one.
I've done it a few times before to get a new book when i've bought old cars which have been laid up years. It sounds like a lot of hassle but it's not really too bad.

What if the car has been officially scrapped, but I have bought it.

Well if it's down as scrapped then forget it really

Depends really,if the car has a official Certificate of destruction issued against the car then unfortunately the car cannot go back on the road.
If the car had the taxbook sent back as scrap without a COD,then sometimes all that is required to return the car to the road is an official motor engineers report,I have seen this done a few times in the past.
