Hi Laptop was working fine bu then began randomly shutting down when performing a virus scan on it.

I tried a system restore but the laptop shut down in the middle of it.

It now cant get past 50% of this

Is there any way to get around this, for example wipe the system completly and install inwdows 7? or do i have a hardware issue?

doubt it's a hardware issue. If it was me I would try and repair the os installation.

lets try to check the harddisk first. turn on the computer and hit the f8 key. You will see various options - select command line.

Once the command line has appeared type:

    chkdsk /r

this process will examine and try to repair your disk.

when you turn on your computer keep hitting f8 until you see screen asking you if you want to boot into safe mode etc. You want to select the command line entry.

also after it happened the first few times i unscrewed the case and some the harddrive, is it there a possibility iv done damage?

i can't say without seeing it, but if the disk is improperly installed then there is a possibility that it could be damaged. I've seen this type of issue on many laptops and desktops and have always been able to fix it.

Sounds like the laptop is overheating.

What happens when you turn it on, do you see any screens at all.
    What exactly did you unscrew?

    Are the fans coming on?
Do you feel it heating up at the bottom?
If you leave it on a flat surface like a table does it last longer?

yeah i had a problem with overheating for a while

so i unscrewed the back of the laptop and tried to dust it,

i then turned on the computer and downloaded a virus scanner, which cut out have way through.

This happened a few times before i unscrwed the hard drive as well

Is it possibe that i have stopped the fan working somehow?
it is very hot to touch just after launching

I would say definately overheating then.
Its possible that you stopped the fan working but you might be better off leaving someone look at it for you.

If this is not an option do you have a full model number for the laptop, the HP site lists all of these options:
    Compaq Presario CQ50-100EM Notebook PC
    Compaq Presario CQ50-107EA Notebook PC
    Compaq Presario CQ50-110EM Notebook PC
    Compaq Presario CQ50-110EN Notebook PC
    Compaq Presario CQ50-112EM Notebook PC
    Compaq Presario CQ50-115EM Notebook PC

Probably all the same but I dont want to root out the wrong instructions for you.

What you will need to do is strip the laptop to get at the CPU / GPU its straight forward on some machines.

You will have to remove the fan / heatsink etc. and clean cpu and gpu to remove all thermal paste, then reapply a thin layer of thermal paste (you will need to buy some from a computer shop) and put everything back together.

If this scares the life out of you dont attempt it as it requires a little bit of diy ability.

DONT do anything just yet though, except tell me where you are located and the full model number.
