C segment car for ferrying kids to/from school, low emmissions for tax purposes and economical aswell. Short hops mostly but decent boot required which is why looking at C segment and not any smaller.

How does the VW Golf 5dr 1.2TSI 85bhp Comfortline compare to others?

Short hops would imply petrol over diesel, but I suspect in a few years any petrol car (even small cc turbo petrols) is going to be worth a fraction of its diesel counterpart.

Renault Grand Megane would certainly be on my shopping list, pretty much the ideal family car for anyone who doesn't want a dullard MPV.

Few years old Kia Ceed with low milage, will have 3 or 4 years warranty left if you dont drive much and will cost you nothing over the course of its lifetime.

Get something like this for 7k and you will save a fortune, no turbos, superchargers, dmf's and all that bollix a modern built to fall apart engine has, just a simple little bulletproof 1.4 90 something bhp petrol.

Not a bad idea at all. Seeing as the OP is looking at 1.2 golf, it is pretty clear he is not after something so tasty. Id keep the cash and take your advice.

New or nearly new. Mileage is about 8k per annum on short journeys hence petrol. Smll engine aswell to keep tax & ins down

You could get quite a car if you were prepared to go 07/08.

If you have to get a 10 or 11 plate and lose an absolute fortune on depreciation, which would dwarf the 150e savings of low co2 tax 50 fold, then a new Golf wouldn't be a bad choice if you could get a bluemotion tdi.Its interesting enough tech ( until it breaks ) and the 1.6tdi 105bhp is suppose to be a good drive with decent engine flexibility and torque, 1.2tsi is suppose to be a terribile drive, engine response, short clutch bite and fuel economy cant compare to the tdi.

Have you look at the Skoda Yeti or Roomster?

I wouldnt advise a vrs tdi for the stop start trips it would be doing.

id say that helps make a choice for the op

If it's short hops I'd be inclined to stay away from the small engined turbos, school runs won't be kind to the turbo.

I'd be inclined to look at a traditional 1.4 petrol
