Hey folks, Does anybody know the best way to get a job as an avionics technician, can I do a course on my own time or do I have to do an apprenticeship? I'm a qualified electrician, will this stand to me? Any advice greatly appreciated! Cheers

Many routes: license by post, college courses in DIT, Carlow, Newcastle or Kingston. That's the academic side. Then either way you'll need to join an airline as an unlicensed mech for a few years practical experience before you can hold a B2 Avionic License. Ideally get an unqualified mecanics job first and sit exams simultaneously on your own time (Shannon Aerospace, Air Atlanta, Ryanair, Citijet etc)

what you really want is a MRO company(base maintenance) taking you in as a direct entry as a skilled tradesman and training you to a basic level(small bit of classroom work) and about a year On job training to get to a basic level for working as base maintenance tech,im not saying you'l be brilliant after a year but its a start, you can work away towards an EASA license in your own time as you get experience(the key)

dont go do an apprenticeship!!! your over qualified to go back to that crap and to be honest money is poor enough in this game, even certifying B1/B2 engineers contract wages have gone way down, however getting a foot in the door in an MRO company might be tricky in this climate, nowhere in Shannon at the moment,no harm in ringing dublin aerospace asking is there any direct entry vacancies

I wouldn't advise any college courses as you need experience, theres no point learning for years about something without having an clue what a component looks like and you need to see first hand how most things work practically not from a book.Ive seen people come from these academies with all B1's passed and really struggling practically!!

    Any other questions PM me

I'm currently in my final year of my Level 7 BAchelor of Engineering in Electronic Engineering Degree in LYIT. I was wondering, can I branch off into any Level 8 Honours Degree in Avionics? And if so would anyone be able to give me extra info?

Should probably ask someone at your college instead of people on an aviation forum. (Not trying to sound too condescending)

Keep an eye on the regulars for recruiting apprentices. Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Cityjet, Stobart, Dublin aerospace, Atlantic aviation (Ex transaero), Lufthansa technik etc.

If you want to do hands on work on aircraft the only route I'd take is the apprenticeship.
