How would a car deal react?

    Folks,

I have a car for sale. The car is worth approx 18K. Now I need to replace that car, and I'm just wondering...if I was to trade my car in for a car worth less, how would a car dealer react? Say, for example, I was to trade in the car for a car worth 15K, would he write me a chq for the difference? I'm doubtful, given the current climate, so how does it work? are dealers interested in doing swaps?

    Thanks in advance....

What do you mean by worth ? Similar cars asking price off garage forecourts ? Private sale asking prices ? What you think it's worth ?

They'll not swap with you unless your interested in car thats hard to shift, and yours is a desirable low co2 post 08 car for an example.

Well if garages are asking €18,000 for one they hardly will give you that for it so will they ? So realistically if garages are asking €18,000 for what you want to trade in they might give you €14000/€15000 for it if you were spending another €15000 with it.

No way will they give you money if you trade it for something they are retailing at €15000.

What make and model is it and how old is it ?

Ok, to simplify I'm selling this and I'm interested in buying something like this

Having worked in the motor trade, its highly unlikely that a dealer will write you a check to make up the difference, if anything you're only chance is a straight swop .... but even at that your car would have to be sharp ... rite mileage, body style, color, clean bodywork etc .... if the dealer feels your trade In is a more sought after car than the one your are looking to swop for .... then you've every chance, however Jan is the busiest month of the year for the motor trade..... so dealers can afford to be chosy with the models they take in.

Yes, ealers will do a "Money Back" deal.
Basically you are buying one car (for instance ) at " €18000" and they then buy in yoiur car at it';s market value ---less their margin for selling it and less any reconditioning costs associated with putting the car in a "ready for sale" condition. There is also a possible VAT loss to the Dealer and he would also allow for that.
Itf they consider the car not up to their standard or just think that it may be slow to sell they will sell it to a trade buyer.
The best way forward is to ask a Dealer, youir best bet is a Deler that has a Franchise for your brand of Car .

Unless you want to get the cheque book out private sale is to only way, you might get €15K for that but you could be waiting a few months.

Sorry to break it to you, but no dealer is going to want to take your car into stock unless you're prepared to let it go for crazy low money. In the off chance you find a dealer who knows he can move it on quickly, he'll still probably ride you in the knowledge that no one else will want it in stock.

Interesting, what do you base that value on?

    Really nice.

    Two Words - Clean Car!!!

Cant stress it enough. Clean the car completely and polish the ass of it before you takes pics. It shows a lack of pride in the car and the sale.

Great interior but needs more shots.

I would stick with the private sale. Keep the price reasonable and lower it if you wish to change quickly.

    Best of luck.

Also there are similar models going for quite a bit less. So you might want to park yourself somewhere in the middle price wise or you will be sitting with the car for a while.

I base it on the fact that one could buy one from a dealer for €18K so why would anyone give you more than €15K for one :)

Could'nt agree more ... spend 100 euro on a professional valet, inside and Out, wash engine bay etc ... then take new photo's .... 6 outside pics, 3 interior pics .... with the same background ...... a line of trees, hedge. It looks like Ballymun in your background !! Nice car by the way !
