In the last 12 months I've lost about 1.5 inches off my waist but I've put on about 7lbs. I've been training twice a week at martial arts and keep active at the weekends. My clothes fit me better aswell, so how can this be.

I think I've even toned a slight bit on my chest (not much) and people have even said I look like I have lost a little weight.

How can this be? The scales doesnt lie.

Muscle is more dense than fat in that the same weight in muscle takes up less space than the same weight in fat.
You can lose fat but get heavier from the increased muscle.

As above OP, it sounds like you've lost fat and gained muscle. So that's a good start to the new year for you! Keep it up! :D

I'd still like to lose about 8kg this year as I'm over the weight limit for competition and I dont want to be lumped in with all the heavyweights.

Any suggestions on how I can try and do this without adding more weight due to converting fat to muscle?

Fat doesn't convert to muscle, nor does muscle convert to fat.

You might burn off fat and gain muscle, but they are two different tissue types doing different things.

To lose weight is simple; eat less, use more calories. If you are active enough already then cutting back on calories should see you drop the pounds.
