My languid Megane II

I bought a 04 Renault Megane at auction a few months back. It's the 3dr which I love the look of but it's an absolute dog to drive. I have only really noticed in the past month because before that I was driving on snow and ice. I previously had a 00 Astra which was also a 1.4 3dr but much more lively to drive.

The acceleration in the Megane is almost non existent and you almost have to put your foot through the foot well to reach motorway speeds. Anyone else with a Megane have these issues or may I have some problem individual to my car. As I said the Astra I had seemed a world away driving wise although I wasn't driving for a few months after I sold it as I was away.

My folks have a 02 1.4 Megane(the very first of your model) and its also very sluggish.
I had the previous gen 02 scenic with the same problem, turned out to be a combo of coil pack and faulty lambda sensors.
Granted it was still no tyre shredder but it made a profound difference once it was diagnosed and rectified.

Assuming its not a misfire you have(coilpacks are a well known issue with these) and there is no fault light on then I'd be looking at the timing.

The petrol megane needs special tools to change the timing belt and I've seen severy where people have changed the belts without the tools and left the timing slightly off which causes power loss. A quick way to get an idea is to check the plugs, if the timing is off they will have a build up of deposits on them.

Could be several things but one I've seen is the timing being off.

I've actually had the timing belt changed in it since I got it so maybe. Although the guy who did it for me is a trusted local mechanic and think he may have mentioned that he needed speciality tools for the job. I'll have a look at the plugs tomorrow.

Doesn't sound right, how's the fuel consumption? I know the 1L Corsa is almost foot to the floor at motorway speeds but it does have a bit of poke. That said, 1.4 engines tend to vary depending on the manufacturer. There are two 1.4s in the Megane, an 80hp and 98hp, which is a big difference, but torque could be different too. The 80hp version gets to 60mph in a scorching 13.5s, the 95hp in an astonishing 12.5s.

The fuel consumption seems normal but as I said I've pretty much only driven the car for a month on snow and ice. I've no idea which engine is in mine, all I know is it's the Megane II Dynamique 3dr model. Anyway those 0-60 times, bad and all as they are, are no where near what I'm getting. I can maybe get to 50 in that time but 60 can be a struggle. Also, going up any sort of incline seems to result in power loss.

Check the instruction book that comes in the car, It might specify what engine is in the car.

I dropped into my mechanic on the way home from work the other day. He drove it down the road, popped the bonnet and had a fiddle. Now it's sorted. It turned out just to be a small problem with the accelerator linkage.

Great! Now the land speed record is finally within your reach. I hear Bugatti is rather concerned :D
