Just had a look at taxback.com, and their fees are extremely high for tax refunds. A lot of J1'ers here seem to use them. They charge a minimum of USD75 plus handling charge for just up to USD750 and take around 12 to 16 weeks to process. I used turbotax.com easy edition whilst in America last year on a J1 and they charged around 15USD and had me refunded within a month into my bank account, no paperwork, everything done electronically. For anyone who has kept their US bank account open I'd recommend they use turbotax over this rip off dublin based taxback.com.

Or you could do it yourself and pay no fee's what so ever,
The fee's are upfront and there are plenty of other options available.

Another user could claim that turbotax.com is a ripp-off as they charge 15e when the whole thing can be done for nothing.

Hi Kevin. Our fee is structured as a percentage of the overall refund amount and we offer the fastest maximum legal tax refund. TurboTax is an online solution for US residents whereas the taxback.com service has a specialist division for both US non residents (which is the category which J1 students fall into) and residents. We have a long history of filing tax returns for J1 students and many people come to us to re-submit tax returns that have been initially incorrectly filed by other providers and left them subject to IRS fines and penalties.

Our fee encompasses an end-to-end service in 22 different languages with 24 hour assistance, dedicated tax support and guaranteed compliance with relevant tax laws, no matter what the jurisdiction is. We’re there to answer any questions throughout the process and ensure that you are fully up to speed with all IRS requirements.

A refund estimation can be obtained free with absolutely no obligation to proceed and you will only pay for our service once your refund comes through from the tax office.

I am in the middle of processing a Canadian tax refund through Taxback.com. I have just received an email asking for my bank details and that I will be charged an additional bank fee of $40 to transfer to my account. I have contacted the call centre asking for cheque or bank draft so as to avoid paying another fee but was told this is not possible. I have used taxback.com before and they offered me a cheque but I went for Bank transfer as it only cost e7.50.
Has anybody else managed to receive a cheque? I got 2 differeent excuses as to why I acnt have a cheque. The first was that they only issue cheques for small refunds. The second was that bank transfers are safer and they dont want customers encountering problems receiving their refund. it looks like I'm going to have to go ahead and pay the $40 unless anyone here can advise otherwise?

I used taxback.com for Australia tax last year and had no issues. However, this year I applied in March, it took them to May 6th or so to reply with a 'your process has been sent and should will be through in about 6-8weeks'. I had previously got an email insisting that if I fill in form to speed up your process which I did. 10 weeks went by and I contacted an agent who said one to two weeks. On the third week I got back to them and they said that they're expecting it anytime now. Two weeks later after chasing them up again, I get an email saying that they are expecting word back from the ATO in 28days atleast. So 6-8weeks has become or 15weeks and an expected 4before I hear back which will probably actually be 18weeks, then if miracles happens another week or two for it to go into my bank. An absolute joke. my superannuation is due back in 12weeks, or after Christmas in taxback.com time. DO NOT USE TAXBACK.COM if you want your money back anytime soon. The handling fee was hefty, about $578 dollars to taxback.com and $118 handling or something, but they did have to chase after one farmers abn details for me and they did actually get me a decent taxback fee. That is providing I ever see it.

Anyone any issues with new rules with Taxback.com - I sent in my refund forms for 2014 J1 last April. They said all paperwork needed was received and that it would take 10 - 12 weeks. Just contacted them and they now say I've to pay their fee in advance and once paid it'll take another 10 - 12 weeks! When I queried the new rule, they said they sent out a "mass" email to everyone expecting IRS refunds. They said they could provide the IRS documentation where it says the rules have changed - I googled it and it changed last January. Then they said they were still waiting on some documentation from me even though they said last April they had everything.
Any advice would help please :-(
