i am a returned emigrant and haven't driven on irish roads in 12 years but am thinking of getting the ball rolling. i'm married with an 8 year old so am very much looking at a small 3 door. i would be willing to go new or 2nd hand but the latter only through a dealer as i know little about cars and wouldn't risk a private sale. funds are very tight so value, reliability and economy are main considerations. i have heard the jazz is very good but too pricey. any thoughts about 1) what car and 2) best way to buy 2nd hand would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a kid get a 4 or 5 door, 3 door will be a pain letting them in and out. 4/5 door will have child locks if your worried about them opening the doors.

if we buy 2nd hand, the budget would probably be e3500. with new, probably about e10000 as with financing, this can be paid off over a number of years. I don't know if this option is available on used cars and would appreciate anyone's suggestions. engine size of 1.4 max and i would definitely considera diesel s apart from cheaper fuel, i believe the engines go forever and need little maintenance.

I would reckon a 03 or 04 Fiesta 5 door would do you nicely. For example....
