My Hair is Burnt!!!

:eek:I have been going to the same hairdressers now for about a year and have been very happy with the lady who does my hair. However Back in October I went and got the usual mesh highlights but asked her to go a shade lighter with them. She put the colours on and put me under the heat for almost 40 mins! I didn't think anything of this at the time but I did notice when she was blowdrying my hair that it was a bit "sticky" - she kept having to spray something on it to get the brush through it. A few days later when I tried to blow dry it myself I was appalled at how dry and frizzy my hair was.

I went back at christmas to have my hair done and she kept going on about how bad condition my hair was in and how the water in my area had obviously faded the colour she had done. She said it was in such bad condition that she couldn't highlight it and put a colour on it instead - like a warm blonde, she again put me under the heat for a long time and my hair is now as dry as ever! When I get up in the morn it sticks straight up on my head and I have to wash it or use the hairdryer and GHD's on it to get it in any shape.

Is there anything anyone can suggest that I could use to soften my hair? I know the frazzled ends will only be helped by being cut and I will never again go back to that hairdressers but I'm in desperate need of something to soften my hair at least!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Stop using the ghd. And the hairdryer if you can.

    Arghhhh!
    Stop using GHD and hairdryer!!
Your hair will fall out at that rate, and I'm not joking. Last thing you want to do to already damaged hair.
Try some masque or leave-in conditioner. You could also try soaking it in olive oil (apply the oil and then wrap cling film around it) overnight to help.
Egg in the oil might work as well.

Same thing happened to me last summer- got blonder than usual highlights done abroad and my hair was ruined after it. Just had to use loads of masks, and conditioner, but frankly it took weeks before it softened again. Ditch those hairdressers, for sure!

I had my hair badly damaged by a hairdresser last year and I've been using Kerastase Bain de Force shampoo since. It's really helped to strengthen my hair, along with using an intensive conditioner mixed with a normal conditioner every day. If your hair is burnt, you actually need to put strength back into it with something like Redken's protein reconstructing spray. My (new) hairdresser told me to use it a few times a week - it does make your hair stronger, but it feels a bit coarse because of the protein. Worth it in the long run though.

My hair was really dried out - I was in SE Asia for 3 months - and my hairdresser recommended a Kerastase product, which seemed to really help.

I would definitely recommend a treatment called deep fuel by redken.

I had been dying my hair permanent black for years and I decided I wanted to dye it back to my natural colour so I had to bleach it first,

I ended up bleaching it around 4 times over 2 days, I couldn't get it all the one colour so I dyed it back to black but anyway as you can imagine my hair was destroyed

I bought the deep fuel treatment which is a protein treatment so you use it and then afterwards condition it as normal and it was AMAAAAAZING, it comes in a box with about 5 sachets I think and you can get it in Peter Marks or anwhere they sell Redken products!
There's reviews all over the internet for it, check these ones out on makeupalley http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemId=25957/Extreme_Deep_Fuel/Redken/Treatments

keratin treatments, a good shampoo, try a different hairdresser, get a free consultation and see what they recommend where u go with your colour.
avoid the straightener, let your hair dry naturally.

A similar thing happened my friend lately :(
And I remember asking a hairdresser about this and she said that the water in your local area has nothing to do with it. It has something to do with the amount of colour she's putting into you're hair..
But to be fair the main reason is the GHD and hairdryer. They make your hair so damn dry :(. Try and ditch them or use them less.

Well to be honest I got only the ghds after I got my hair done to try and calm the frizz! No I have come to the conclusion it was def the colour they used or the fact that they put me under the heat with it on. I am 35 and have been colouring, blow drying and straightening my hair for years and sure at times it gets dry - split ends etc but NEVER has it been a condition anywhere near as bad as this - it really is very dried and frazzled.. Worst thing is my style is quite short and my hair quite fine so I can't exactly show up to work having let it dry naturally - it'd be a mess!!

You can't be careful enough with your choice of hairdresser - I won't be back!!!

Get a protein treatment and your hair will be fine, trust me you won't believe the difference!

Kerastase Masqueintense is a really good masque and as others have said invest in a good shampoo and conditioner, it really does make a difference.

i had the exact same problem about a year ago. distroyed my hair trying to be blonde. My hair was as dry as straw. Tried so many different shampoo's and conditioning treatments. complete waste of money ant time. If anything, i'd say try only wash your hair ounce a week to let your natural oils get at it. as other people said, just let it dry naturally and streighten it 1ce or 2ice a week. If you continue dying it, you wont have healthy hair, no matter what treatment you use. Best thing i ever did was go back my natural colour. All the treatments I used were a short term fix. my advice would be to embrace your natural colour!!!

A tip a hairdresser gave me a couple of years ago - get some flaxseed oil from a health store (I pay €10 in my local town store) and put it in the ends of your hair, put on a shower cap and sleep in it, shampoo and condition in the morning. Keep this up and your hair will be like silk!

the water has nothing to do with it that colour was left on way too long under heat. treatments should help but if its very badly damaged cutting is the best thing you could do

just a question for those recommending these protein conditioners and similar products- is there a point in using these when dying your hair? obviously there is if you're looking to reverse the damage colour has done but...

i dunno if this makes sense but i bleach my roots and then put crazy colour (semi-permanent conditioning dye) over it. but this dye is more like a coating than a chemical dye that penetrates the hair.

so if these conditioning treatments are supposed to improve the hair will it fade/strip my colour and if it doesnt will putting colour back over it not undo it? and would i even see a difference since its not my natural hair- like ive a colour coating the hair so will that 'block' the shine of my natural hair? if that makes any sense whatsoever!! :)

the reason your colour fades is because its semi permanent they fade out.
protein treatment goes into the cortex of the hair and wont have an affect on the colour, the semi colour goes into the cuticle.
the treatments is suppose to smoothen the cuticle and work inside the hair (cortex)
    hope that answers ur question.

I'm not sure if it would fade or strip your hair but I don't think putting colour over it would undo it, the redken one I recommended earlier is supposed to repair your hair for up to 8 washes and then after the 5 treatments your hair is supposed to be 3 times stronger than before you started (you get 5 sachets in the box).

That wasn't my experience at all, It actually worked much better than that for me, don't know if you read my earlier post but I bleached and repleached my hair several times over a couple of days and completely fried it, I then dyed it black again and used the treatment ONE TIME and it completely restored it, it worked amazingly!

I'd love to know more about these dyes you are using, any chance any of them would work over dyed black hair?

this is going to sound incredibly rude and ungrateful and i dont mean for it to, but i know how the colours work and i know its a semi. (hence me having to add the colour to my conditioner to maintain it rolleyes.gif ) im not trying to be a cow i swear, i just want you to know what question i was trying to ask- the way u said about the cortex and cuticle kind of touches on what i was asking though.

if the cuticle is coated in the colour (which is what the CC does, it kind of more 'bonds' to the hair instead of penetrating it) and im strengthening the hair from the inside will all that work be for nothing if the colour is hiding it so to speak? and will it still work on smoothing the cuticle with the coating of crazy colour on it, and if it does treat the cuticlle will it affect the colour when doing so? (keeping in mind that i use the colour alot to maintain it)

i really wasnt trying to shoot down your post so sorry if i came accross that way

only saw cc-offe's post there, they work best on pre-lightened hair but they can add a sheen to darker hair- kind of like cheryl coles red but not as noticeable, just a kind of shimmer of colour- but i doubt they'd do anything to black hair cause its too dark- theres galleries and info on all the different brands on this site- http://www.beeunique.co.uk/

i cant give u a definite answer, i would imagine it wouldnt affect the cuticle regarding colour. thats just from reading what they do. my friend uses catkin by redken and theres a big difference in her hair. all u can do is try it and see. ;)

yeh im beginning to realise that thats the only way il learn! :p
im debating whether to go for the kerastase stuff which was recommended by my hairdresser who hasn't been wrong yet, and its 20% off in peter mark atm, or splash out on some morrocan oil! they've a light one for fine hair and all!

    Hi OP

I get blonde highlights in my hair every 8/10 weeks.
I wash my hair 3/4 times a week and only ever use GHDs once at the weekends. Ive been trying to grow my hair so I have been paying it alot of attention over the past year & half.

I always change my shampoo & condioner every 2/3 months- this was recommended by my hairdresser a few years ago. I am using BedHead Dumb Blonde range now and at least once a week I will leave conditioner in my hair for at least an hour, sometimes if at the weekend I will leave it in overnight and I really do find it helps.
I also use BedHead Ego Boost and find this great for my dry ends.

If I feel my hair getting dry I use the Aussie 3 min range to give it that extra boost.
Just before I get my highlights done I use a Bedhead Peppermint hair mask (dont know the exact name) a few days before my trip to hairdresser just to ensure my hair isnt dry before the highlights.

My sister uses a Loreal hair mask from their expert range and she swears by it, so i'm going to give it a go next time. I dont know the exact name of it, but I can find out and post later.

Maybe try leaving a hair mask in your hair overnight as I really do find this work wonders and if you can invest in a good shampoo/ conditioner range.

With care & time you will have your locks back in no time.

That's very helpful thanks, i've been only putting the semi permanent black now for a few years (I used permanent black for years so the ends are still black obviously) so i'm sure I could use it on the top layers, when the semi comes out it's my natural colour down to nearly my chin so I could just leave the underneath layers black and dye the top layers without needing to lighten it too much, I'd prob need to lighten some of the longer parts at the back if you know what I mean.

yeh i know what you mean, or else you could use their black dyes if u wanted and at least it'd give you the same colour but in a less damaging way... but i think you wanted something different

Yea exactly, if you don't like the colours is there any way to get them out? Ooh so exciting looking at all the colours on the website, thanks for link!

no bother- just keep in mind that most are on pre-lightened hair, theres a gallery of the dyes on 'virgin' hair though afaik.

if u dont like the colour u can wait til it washes out, or u can help it along by using clarifying shampoo or fairy liquid. theres also a thing called a bleach bath (they discuss these on the forum of that site i linked, and give a tutorial too), which is like a diluted bleach to remove the colour in a less damaging way than pure bleach but i wouldnt recommend it if your hair is already fried.

colour b4 wont work very well on these dyes because, like i said they work differently to normal dyes, however apparently the 'buffer' in colour b4 has a bit of an effect on it but not as much as normal dyes.

i used to use a pink stargazer one on top of my hair that was dyed with an XXL dye in real red and it was really glossy and had like a bright hue to it. id get loads of compliments on it but id been doing it for years so decided it was time to let go and try something new so i just went bright red- unfortunately for me, so too did rihanna and everybody else that wanted 'rihanna red' hair, and everyone keeps telling me ive hair like rihanna so it looks like i may be changing again! ;)

Thanks, looking at the pics now for the 'virgin' hair, they would probably be ideal for me, Rihanna will probably change her hair soon enough, if you like it then keep it :)

well they sell those dyes on that site but they also sell directions hair dye in Asha in dublin city centre, and they sell crazy colour in Terrisales, i think Special effects is easiest to get online but if u find in a store let me know cause im thinking of using it!, and they sell some stragazer in new loook.

word of warning, they stain everything (because they effectively 'stain' the hair) so if you've a white bathroom/shower wash it straight away afterwards, especially if you're using red/pink- my shower has a lovely pink tint to it from all the dying and washing of my hair!

There's a Sally salon services near me, i might ring tomorrow and see if they have anything similar.
Thanks for the warning about the staining!
