    I've just started re-learning how to crochet and am using a 'beginners' pattern to make a blanket.

    The first row says as follows: Row 1 – 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across (104 sts) counting ch 4 as first dc

    Can anyone explain this in english?

    There are two kinds of crochet, US and English. The pattern you have is US, because it talks about double crochet (dc) but says you make three extra chains. If it was an English pattern it would tell you to make trebles. Did you learn English or US do you know?

    The pattern you are using is saying you will do a row of US doubles or English trebles. When you cast on a foundation chain you do three extra chains to take the place of the first (Eng) treble, so you make the second treble into the fourth stitch from the hook, then a treble in each foundation chain to the end.

    The whole business of English and US crochet makes it a bit complicated, but you need to know what style you are using and make sure you only use patterns that suit that style.

    This is a handy cheat sheet for your stiches:

    http://learncrochetforfree.com/learncr1/?p=13

    'The first row says as follows: Row 1 – 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across (104 sts) counting ch 4 as first dc'

    This line means:

    * make a slip knot
    * make a chain 108 chains long
    * count 4 chains from the last 1 you made and make a double crochet in that stitch
    * make a double crochet in every stitch until you reach the end of the chain you made
    * now to make sure the blanket is going to be the right size count back all the double crochets you made and make sure there are 104 of them

    whats the next line of the pattern?

    ps its easier to draw a pic of the pattern like this:
