i've always had an interest in learning about cars more than changing oil filters.
I like getting my hands dirty and would like to learn more about working on cars as a past time after work.
would anyone be able to point me in the right direction regarding motoring clubs or help.

I'm not aware of any mechanical clubs that would spend time doing that kind of stuff.

Are you just wanting to learn more or apply what you already know - I mean are you a novice or an expert?
Have you got yourself a haynes manual yet? They are fairly crap nowadays but will get you started. You can get them in Easons, halfords, online, etc. of from them @ www.haynes.com.
Some models are covered by a publisher called Bentley and others by Chilton.

Then I would recomment getting a workshop manual for a car that you can work on (or if you are a saddo like me then pick some up for cars that you like and just read them).

Also take a look at other sites such as:
    www.carbibles.com
    Motors Tech Help
    Specific marque forums
    etc.
There are presumably videos on youtube but there really isn't anything like DIY.
