Gaming Graphics, all the fuss

    Ok lads,

A lot of posts here about will my laptop play this and play that, so I have attached a pic of the card in my laptop...you can see from the pic why gaming laptops are rather expensive.

bit of a monster..! I was cleaning out the fans and put on new thermal compound, got the temps from 80 degrees down to 35 degrees.

Dell are awful for applying decent compound on gpus :(

The card is a 9800GT Sli, its a good few years old now but is still near the top end of gaming cards.

Anyone who wants to play games now is a bit lucky as prices have gone down to a level where you can get really good performance for a decent price (1000e or less).

The rule of thumb is keep away from intel gma graphics if you want to do any gaming at all....

I took my laptop apart the other day just to clean out the dust - 3 years of buildup, saw a 10 degree drop. Before that it was RMA'd for the Nvidia GPU issue and that saw an even hbigger drop in temps. This thing used to make me sweat, put red marks on my wrist (short of real burns) and sounded like a leafblower. Its normal again.

I had to do ALL OF THAT just to get proper access to the fan and heatsink to DUST the motherfcuker! the dv6000 was a terrible case. Next laptop I buy will have a removable access for the vents. Not enough dust to fill a thimble, but all in the wrong place for heat and noise buildup.

My laptop was not too bad as the graphic card was seperate, but you had to rip it all up to get access to the heatskinks and remove gunk from the fans.

3 hours work, also the cpu I replinished, had to remove the whole mobo, not too difficult if you have patience and some silky fingers..
