    Completely agree.

Goes against any good web design principle.
Also if you choose for example Belgium>Brussels>English, the links and lots of info is in French!?
    :confused::mad:

I hate websites which are too smart for their own good.

    +1 unnecessary

Its a pain. I wonder do they analyse the statistics and wonder why are so many people from Salzburg, Austria.

To think someone thought it was a good idea, and actually paid to devise and implement this 'enhancement'. It shows the waste that is still built in to Aer Lingus, with people still busy contributing nothing. Or less.

Annoying... but not as annoying as the session timeout they had on their flight update page over the xmas that would take you back to the start page and required clicking through a number of links to see if there was any new details on your delayed flight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭oneweb

It's completely impractical, obviously requested by someone who has no idea of a sensible user experience and implemented by someone with an inability to do it properly.

It goes against basic usability by not being easily dismissable/closable. Probably inaccessible to people who use screen readers and unnecessarily awkward for people with mobility issues. It doesn't have a standard form submit button so the Enter key won't work, meaning users have to click a small image.

It doesn't let you login to your account which could very well store such preferences.

Not all functions on the site need any of that information (Travel Information, Vouchers, Hotels, Cars) and even sections that could be prefilled aren't (Check In online).

    In a word - useless.

I've searched the site for a contact email address but only found a phone number.
Call Website Helpdesk IRL 0818 365044 to tell them what you think of the popup, the more people who complain about it the better the chance of them doing something about it!

In the meantime, create a new bookmark with the following link. Next time you go to Aer Lingus and the popup blocks your visit, just click and the box will disappear! :) Let me know if you find this useful.

    javascript:$('#boxes').remove();void(0);

    It is what it's.

Isn't there a checkbox giving you the option to "remember my selection" or something like that?

Still, you'd think they'd default it to Dublin Ireland given that it's their largest base or, at the very least, list their bases first over other destinations served.

I have a number of Firefox add-ons installed, including Adblock Plus and NoScript. One of them prevents this box from showing up. Instead, the entire Aer Lingus page loads and everything looks clickable (the graying-out part does not happen either) but I am unable to click on anything. Absolutely disgraceful user experience. It took me a while to figure out what was going on and then extra time to find out how to get around it. In one word: Useless.

Its a nuisance and pain the backside. if their trying to track their clicks can they not just get onto google analytics. Hopfully some geek in aer lingus hq will remove it soon

Funny that this annoying pop-up begins with "In order to improve your browsing experience.." - You really couldn't make it up

Ahh, the elusive Aer Lingus contact email address...Would you believe that it can be found in a link under "If you cannot find the information you are looking for in our Need Help section please click here to email us your query."

Of course...that depends on you being able to find where that helpful hint is.

Goto the "help" tab on their website, (after giving them your country, local airport and language :p)

    Scroll down to "Online forms"

In the online forms section click on "more".

Under the new page, again under "online forms" you will see "email query".

Click on this and you will be brought to the bottom of the page to a section called "Email Query"

Clicking on email query brings you to a box saying "Enter the details of your query here...".

If you fill it in you can click on a "submit" button. However hovering over the submit button shows that the email address for contacting aer lingus is...

    ccc at aerlingus.com

I emailed them the following on 5th February:

"Your website for the last while tells me "in order to
improve your browsing experience please..." select the country I'm in, the
nearest airport and my language. I can tell you that this drives myself and
many of my friends and family mad every time we visit the site and is the
complete opposite of improving my browsing experience!"

    No reply as yet.

    I fu*king hate it.

Had to book about 6 flights over the past few weeks and between checking out prices and actually buying the tickets it really started to bug me. The site also takes an age to load fully sometimes.

    Got a reply from ccc@aerlingus.com

"Thank you for contacting aerlingus.com. I apologise for the delay in responding to you.

I have passed on your comments to our I.T. section but the splash page is

currently under review and no decision has been made yet whether to remove it.
I hope this information is of help. "

The underlining and colour of that sentence was by Aer Lingus so they must have had some feedback about it - now see how long it takes for them to admit it was a stupid idea.

Agreed it's not particularity nice at all but the Swineair website takes some beating, having to trawl though clicking no - no thanks, etc, etc for everything from overpriced luggage to overpriced car rental is seriously annoying.:(

Ryanair clicking no, no, no etc, serves us a usefyul purpose though of advertising which keeps the price down. I like it. Happy that those who buy through those pages are subsidising my flight.

The airlingus thing is just a badly judged, anooying pain.

That pop up is so irritating. I've often found when I'm checking the website from another country even when I select English as my language it directs me to the homepage in the native language of the country I want to fly from. I hope Aer Lingus take notice of the frustration of users and get rid of it.

anyone annoyed at ryanair.ie making you enter a postcode the last few months, that pisses me off quite a bit

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 455 ✭✭0verblood

I've been trawling airline website for flights recently and that thing really pisses me off, glad to know I'm not the only one. I'm going to email them now. Can everybody else please email them and tell them how annoying it is?

it's still there. Complete incompetence at this stage. They can't be under any illusion but that it was a stupid mistake but they can't admit a mistake and fix it.

    ccc AT aerlingus.com

I'd guess if Christoph Mueller was aware of this it would be fixed a lot quicker. Anyone know his address - mind you a few stabs at it would probably come up trumps.

Is it just me that thinks they are incompetent?

It is quite annoying and I wish they'd get rid of it, it is fine if you never clear your cache or web history as you only have to do it once, but as I have firefox set to wipe everything when I close it that means I have to enter it every single time I visit their site.

I emailed ccc at aerlingus.com and asked had they finished their "review" of the pop up. The following is the reply I received - tell me I'm mistaken thinking they will not correspond on this matter via email?

    Thank you for contacting aerlingus.com

The Aer Lingus complaints procedure is as follows --

If you have recently booked or travelled with Aer Lingus and would like to compliment our service or if you wish to submit a claim or bring to our attention an aspect of service you were not entirely satisfied with please forward a signed letter or fax (emails are not acceptable) to Customer Care at the following address:

    Aer Lingus Customer Care

    Aer Lingus Head Office Building

    Dublin Airport

    Co Dublin

    Fax Number: 00353 1 886 38 32

Please provide full details including all receipts where applicable.

I would like to assure you that a member of our Customer Care Team will respond to you in full as soon as possible. However please be kind enough to allow us some time to complete our investigation thoroughly, where necessary. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding in this matter.

I hope this information is of help,

    Kind Regards,

    Brian,

    CCC Help desk.

They are saying emails are not acceptable and complaints must be by letter or fax but they then say they "will respond" as soon as possible - they bolded the bit about "aspect of service you are not happy with"...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,916 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

emailed them again for a personal reply - here it is - classic example of a company that is not prepared to listen to customer feedback.

Thank you for contacting aerlingus.com. I apologise for the delay in responding to you.

As already advised in our previous emails there are no plans to disperse with the SPLASH PAGE at the present time.

Please forward your complaint to --

    Aer Lingus Customer Care
    Aer Lingus Head Office Building
    Dublin Airport
    Co Dublin
    Fax Number: 00353 1 886 38 32
I hope this information is of help.

    Kind Regards,
    Brian,

    CCC Helpdesk.

So they won't do anything except say "no" to an email complaint, tell you that they won't remove the pop up and then invite you to complain by post or fax...

This stupid thing is really annoying, thanks for the bit of javascript oneweb, bookmarked. Sent them a mail too for all the good it'll do. They don't want to listen.

That pop up seems to be gone now, but i've noticed lately when I log onto aerlingus homepage it displays the US version of the site for some reason, I have to manually select Dublin as my departing city, never had to do that before. I'm in Dublin using UPC broadband with UPC dns.
    Anyone have similar prob?

It's defaulting to London Heathrow (UK site) for me. UPC also.

Why would they sub divide it by country anyway - it'd be quicker just with one big list. Now they are forcing you to select a country and then scroll down a (smaller) list.

Might be gone but its defaulting to US for me so I still have to select the country so no difference really.

I hate when I go onto the aerlingus website from my phone and it just goes to that page telling you to download the app. I don't want the bloody app- its useless and normally brings you to the website in the end anyway.

Why can't they just direct you straight to the website and have a link in the corner telling people they have a app >:(
