I got that phone for free from the CPW in September. It was some student deal where if you top up by 20e credit you get the phone free, but when i printed off the voucher it said nothing about the credit, just a free phone, so i went in and the guy just gave me it.

Its not the best phone but even at that price it's worth it as a backup.

Well you can get the nokia 1800 on vodafone for €9.99 for the switch network option, if you have a spare O2 sim. With bethrifty.ie theres also €12.50 cashback meaning you might make a profit of €2.51 from the deal

any idea if they can be unlocked?
no box supports them, unlocking codes costs €30+, and most of turbo sims most likely wont work with them i suppose?

Friend of mine got one of these and i have to say its some phone for a tenner, way nicer than the nokia 1616 than can be picked up for about 25 - 30€. Feels much more solid and has a much nicer screen. Not a bad phone for texting either as far as i can see. Also comes with a 1000mA battery compared to the nokia's 800mA

Heres the thing though, my friend was told he had to get 20€ o2 credit with it to get it for a tenner, sure enough he did and though the phone would be locked to o2 but sure enough it isnt

Is this deal gone or are they available in store for a tenner?

Good morning, apologies for any confustion caused by the failed security check emails that some of you have received. I know that these are quite frustrating especially when you have not reasoning behind them.

These checks are put in place to protect the customer and to ensure that their card is not used by a fraudulent third party.

There are a number of security reasons that an order may fail a security check which include:

    1. The card details do not match billing or delivery details
    3. If a customer is registered on the network under another name for the same number
    4. If a customer bought two or more phones in last month
    5. If we cannot verify that the address is real/valid
    6. If the email address provided is not valid

Apologies to anyone who was affected by this but these checks are a necessary precaution to protect our customers. I’d also like to apologise for any delay in informing customers that they had failed these checks. The online team are processing orders are quickly as possible but there are obviously delays due to the influx of orders for the Wave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭baldshin

If a customer buys 2 phones??? so carphone warehouse blocks customers from multiple purposes-that's not a very smart business model is it? how about instead of cancelling orders you call the cardholder to confirm their order? so so much wrong with the way your business model works.

What a load of Rubbish . When ordering there is no mention of delivery address matching card address. I checked the "Terms and Conditions" and it doesnt exist . You had my phone number which could have been used to let me know you needed to deliver to card address. I reckon if it was a Blackberry i'd ordered I wouldnt have failed the check....
Anyway if you PM me i'll give you my order number and you can dispatch it to the credit card address and that should sort it out . Or is "Failed Security Check" just a cover up. I;ve tried calling the number provided (01)862**58 but theres no answer since 8am . The freephone number doesnt deal with orders but will pass it on and someone will call me back (We'll see)

Good morning all, I just wanted to give a quick update to those who received word that their order did not pass security checks.

These checks are put in place to protect the customer and to ensure that their card is not used by a fraudulent third party.

There are a number of security reasons that an order may fail a security check which include:

    1. The card details do not match billing or delivery details *** Mine Does***
    3. If a customer is registered on the network under another name for the same number ***I bought a SIM free Phone, why does network matter ?***
    4. If a customer bought two or more phones in last month **** I haven't ****
    5. If we cannot verify that the address is real/valid **** How do you do this, If your so called Customer service bothered to call / email with a request of proof of delivery I could hve sent bills to prove my address by email ***
    6. If the email address provided is not valid **** It was****

Apologies to anyone who was affected by this but these checks are a necessary precaution to protect our customers. I’d also like to apologise for any delay in informing customers that they had failed these checks. The online team are processing orders are quickly as possible but there are obviously delays due to the influx of orders for the Wave.

    What now??

Good to see that my 5 year Anti-CPW stance isn't causing me to miss anything

I got called a liar, a tit and basically have the store manager shout at me for 5 minutes, in their Blackpool (Cork) store once, for refusing to allow them to "repair" a Motorolla phone. This was after 5 previous "repairs", within warranty, that they tried to charge me for each time. Sister had the same problem with the same phone.

Said that I would like my money back or store credit, then the abuse started.
Shame to see that their Customer Service has not improved since then

I'm very sorry that you had an experience like this in the past but I can assure you that we have been working hard to bring the highest level of customer service as possible. This recent incident is not a reflection of the day to day running of our customer care or the customer service we provide. This is an unprecedented mishap that we are working very hard to resolve as soon as possible.

Just to be clear, is it the keystone mishap that's unprecedented, the wave one, or both?

So has anyone actually got the phone for €9.99? and should this deal not be marked expired

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭m4rkiz

received email today - "Unfortunately we cannot process your order as we have run out of stock of this item."

they spelled my name wrong, didn't even capitalize it... just checked - it is spelled right in my order, so simple copy and paste would do the trick...

it took them only 9 days to find out that they are out of stock, nice

btw. check the point number two in security check list posted in this thread ;)

and number four is just plain stupid

    I got mine :D

Ok Folks, my phone finally arrived this morning in the post, What I did to get it was I left a message on CPW's facebook page last week questioning this whole fiasco & they called me, I said exactly as I said in my post above & I was told that they would try to source a Keystone for me.........

I received a tracking number by email on Friday & the phone arrived today.

So other Boardsie's try posting messages on the CPW Facebook page, it might work out for you... ;)

    Cheers OP :)

Well you can get the nokia 1800 on vodafone for €9.99 for the switch network option, if you have a spare O2 sim. With bethrifty.ie theres also €12.50 cashback meaning you might make a profit of €2.51 from the deal

Hi Ghost Train - thanks for this tip. I needed a temporary replacement phone on Vodafone pay as you go and followed your advice. Got an eMobile SIM pack (free) and then purchased the Nokia 1800 via Bethrifty so am presumably in line for ending up having been paid €2.51 for the handset. :)

Yes, a friend and I, also had a bad experience with the Carphone Warehouse, many years ago. The problem is they won't do anything for you if your phone has a problem. Their attitude is they couldn't care less, and from your post Norrie Rugger, I can see they haven't changed.

We both ended up having to take them to the Small Claims Court. A place Carphone Warehouse regularly find themselves, so I'm told. It would be so much easier for everyone, if they treated people fairly instead. I would never buy anything from the Carphone Warehouse; you have been warned.

To add to the farce. CPW today sent an email stating refunds will take longer than first stated. But here's the punchline....the email contained all email addresses of who ordered this phone in the TO: box.

    WOW!!

Same thing has happened to me, although I was buying the Wave.

See my post here I have already made a formal complaint on the matter to the Data Protection Commissioner.
