What is the best way to put distortion on vocals for a live gig?

I bought a guitar distortion pedal and was assured it would work for vocals. We tried it at a gig but it kept feeding anytime it was turned on accept when we turned down the output and distortion but that had little effect on the vox.

Any ideas? It needs to be a pedal so it can be turned on and off during songs

Honestly, best thing to do there is to get a vocal pedal, while you won't be using most of the effects it has, it can get you that distorted sound you're looking for.
You could be oldschool and try a megaphone - i'll be doing that shortly so i'll let you know how that goes.
Honestly though, the pedal you have should work, so maybe try turning down the gain a tad bit?
