ive been out of the country for the last while so it didnt matter to me, but ill be returning and looking for a job (maybe hopefully godonlyknows..), but thats another conversation.

what id like to know is are the guards enforcing the new restrictions on commercial vehicles, ive got a landcruiser with the seats stripped out, and no job.

    cheers,
    ned .

nothing is new, they merely are starting to enforce the law.

not even that - it was in the news in august when there was nothing ellse to write about. A journalist just decided to stir crap with no basis whatsoever.

Nothing whatsoever has changed. - If you're stopped by a garda and give him/her respect, ther will be no issue. Act the bollox and they'll look for and find something to get you on.

It would be great if a mod could lock this before some know it all comes along and confuses the whole situation. As said, nothing has changed.

I think you will find the problem is when you go to tax the vehicle. If you are not registered for VAT then you will have to pay private tax which on the likes of a Landcruiser is substantial

This post is slightly mistaken in you do not need to be VAT registered to legally operate a commercial vehicle.

You will need to have some sort of business e.g. be registered as a sole trader, have a limited company etc. You are not required to be VAT registered unless your turnover exceeds €3600 per month.

Your local authority may be confused on the issue and may request a VAT number. You can provide them with other evidence of a business however.
