Golf to Astra..

Currently driving an 05 golf which I love. Looking to change to something newer - 08 onwards. At least 1.6, as my 1.4 is a little tame.

I've been thinking about one of these http://www.carzone.ie/search/Opel/Astra/GTC-Desi/201044200135087/advert?channel=CARS

My only worry is, a lot of people have said you can't beat a golf. I would hate to think I'd move to Opel and then hate my car.

Any thoughts on the Astra, performance & reliability wise?

Only reason I'm thinking of getting something other than a golf is cos it seems a bit pointless to change to another golf unless it's brand new.

I've personally owned both a Golf and an Astra before and i prefered the Astra. Had less problems with the Astra.
I'm sure people will have faults with both

This is not directed at the op but more a general observation.

I never could understand why Golf owners or the general public put the Golf up on such a high pedestal by which all other cars in the same class must be judged. Don't get me wrong, the Golf is not a bad car but they are nowhere near as good or class leading as the general public seem to make them out to be. The lesser models to a better extent are nothing special in my opinion.

Cars like the Astra and Focus are every bit as good as a similar Golf especially the bread and butter models. They may not have that clunk when you close a door, dampened grab handles or bits of high quality plastics around the cabin but from a practical and driving dynamics aspect rather than astethics they are just as good if not better.

Personally I would have no problem moving from a Golf to an Astra or Focus.

I'd take a Civic or Focus every time above either.
