How was TV for you over Christmas/New Years?

How was TV for you over Christmas/New Years?

For me for years, it has become ever increasingly worse - but this time around it was so shockingly bad, most of the time the TV was turned off or the shelf dvd's was dug out.
It was repeats, desperate shows, sport at stupid times (and too much), unfunny comedy ("Come Fly With Me" - no thanks!), awful boring shows (Late Late, etc), etc

So am I on my own or was TV just as bad for you? I'd like to hear members thoughts.

I agree. Very bad this year(especially RTE.) Like the New years countdown on the Talent Show. WTF.

Almost everyone on here will agree.

There were a few good films though.

Doctor Who was great.. and not a whole lot else!

Still.. it's Father Ted Night on Channel 4 tonight, plus Big Fat Quiz Of The Year is on Monday. Not all bad!

Caught up on 'No Ordinary Family' over Christmas when I heard it got better.. it really didn't IMO! :(

I second the whole repeats/stupid rubbish/hyped-up-beyond-belief-soaps. The films were good but repeated on every channel eg on RTE today & BBC/UTV/Channel 4 tomorrow. Watched DVDs mostly if anything which is kinda funny as I don't normally watch that many throughout the year!!!

Having said all that, I don't watch a lot of TV these days anyhow, I either stream or download as it shows in the US...

It was the worst i have ever seen including Halloween time, horrendous also new years eve and day tv was the same.Paying for absolute tripe.
I agree i have never seen so many repeats as now.

Dreadful, no highlights at all tbh.

Watching Father Ted night now though which is brilliant so I suppose 2011 is off to a good start!

Christmas tv this year was the worst it's ever been. Only decent thing I watched was Doctor Who.

Signed up for Sky movies for December and January thinking we would have great movies on tap. Biggest waste of money ever. This kids are watching a movie from xtravision at the moment.
Watched the royal family christmas special on gold, that was good.
Anyone know if the big fat quiz is on this year?

I had Darts to watch since the 16th of December, with breaks on the 24th, 25th, 26th, and 31st, so I was well occupied. It's not over until the 3rd.

As for movies, I only watched Scarface last night.

Apart from the Doctor Who Special everything else was pretty much woeful. Worst year for Christmas TV ever :(

Out of ALL the programmes on, there was three that enjoyed/looked forwards to.
The rest was utter tripe like never before. I've honestly, genuinely never seen it so bad in all my years.

Oh.. actually The Royle Family Special was very good, better than the last two turkeys anyways.

The only Decent films I saw were the Two Tomb Raider films over the night before new years eve and on new years eve and that's because I like that film. Some wont agree:o

I very rarely watch tv at Christmas. It has been rubbish every year for as along as I can remember.

A lot of sport on tele helped to save it from being a total disaster.

TV3 had some of the worst programmes though. What the **** was that Irelands top TV moments thing the other night there. Never knew Coronation Street and X Factor were Irish programmes. Then the top celebrity thing last night was hopeless as well

RTÉ's countdown last night was embarrassing. What was the need for the talent show thing to be on as well. Surely they could have that on a different day. It wasnt even the bloody final just the semi final.

I did enjoy seeing Kate Winslets tits on RTÉ at 3 o'clock yesterday though. Not often ya see them so early in the day haha

    The very selective parts I watched were more than entertaining;

The Toy Show documentary was a nice little retrospective on the history of something that's pretty close to the hearts of most of us.

I watched Charlie Brooker's 2010 Wipe yesterday and it was a thousand times a better cap to the tv year than a countdown show.

Peep Show's Christmas/New Year's Eve episodes were great (as usual for the show).

I only watch Top Gear very sporadically as I have little to no interest in cars, but that show so so consistently entertaining it's rarely not worth watching and I've still got the Christmas special lined up to watch, which I don't imagine is going to be major disapointment.

As an above poster said, Christmas in my house mostly means World Championship darts, though, and this year's tournament has been particularly entertaining.

It's been a pretty enjoyable Christmas viewing for me and I'd argue that if anyone think it's been an abomination they either watch too much stuff they knew they weren't going to like or they just didn't search out the things that'd have appealed to them.

It was terrible. I'd rather stab myself in the neck than watch The Royle Family all day. Most of the movie channels were terrible too.

Luckily I had prepared by recording some decent films over the last couple of weeks. I had a few music documentaries I had recorded from Sky Arts too.

To quote you, biggins, and to use your passable spelling of the word, it was schite - apart from the football and darts etc etc.

    Edit:

And Topgear. But I always watch it. :P A couple of good eps this 'festive' season.

    Charlie Brooker's '2010 Wipe' - no contest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

What about it was the same as most other years.

At least RTÉ had Indi on for a full day.

Some good music docs on TG4. But overall I avoided the TV during the festive season. I ate too much and yet lost weight, brilliant.

So 80% so far have said TV was bad one way or another so far.
I can't agrue with that. It wasn't just me that felt that way! LOL

I only watch football on telly. For anything else it's DVD all the way.

    Charlie Brooker's '2010 Wipe' - no contest.

I did watch that, and paid attention to it, and it was the only good thing on. Anything else that was on barely registered with me, so I'm going to say it was an abysmal Christmas on TV.
