Terrestrial Stations, In-car?

    Hey guys,

I need some advice on what I need to setup Terrestrial tv in the car (I.E. RTE, TV2 etc)

I have a monitor and 3-pin plug in the car hooked up to a PS2, megadrive and snes but wouldn't mind having the couple of stations for news reports etc.

What exactly do I need, and does anyone know a rough cost?

Do I need an aerial like a CB one or is there a specific one?

    Cheers

    Tallon

Possible something on the lines of this.
Either ways, ensure tuner is Mpeg4/H.264 capable.

Brilliant, any idea on where I'd get one here? Also, is there a cheaper version, I will be using RGB so don't need HDMI

Came across a couple of these on ebay, works out about €140. Seller feedback looks positive.

Only has Component for HD. So avoid. You should stick to HDMI for HD.

    two alternatives.
An +12V powered Atom car Mobo with Nvidia Ion gpu and HDMI. add a DTT usb tuner stick.

12V to 220V AC inverter to real Saorview or "Freeview HD" setbox. The power consumption is not high, so cost of Invertor plus setbox is less than €140.

At a very quick glance last night, i mistook the USB port for HDMI port. At the same time OP said they would be using RGB and HDMI was not necessary.

Atom/Nvidia ION option would cost a bit more to set up but possibly be much better idea with DTT USB tuner also there is the additional multimedia storage via HDD & possibly mobile internet.

For aerial there are two solutions:
    A) Full spec coach aerial with H & V in a plastic housing. It's bulbus due to awkwardness of the horizontal omni (a halo).

    B) Four patch aerials (these can be made easily), use a 4 way passive splitter as a combiner or two dual splitters (handier for wiring) with 3rd to combine them. A 6dB to 12dB amp at final output of combiners driving feed cable to aerial socket.

Aerial 1: UHF windscreen patch on rear window horizontal at cable end at side edge of frame and at least 10cm away from top or bottom edges.
Aerial 2: UHF windscreen patch on side window horizontal at cable end at side edge of frame and at least 10cm away from top or bottom edges.

    This makes horizontal polarisation omni-directional.

Aerial 3: UHF windscreen patch on rear window vertical with cable end at top or bottom edge of frame and at least 10cm away from side edges and opposite side of glass to the horizontal patch aerial (1).

Aerial 4: UHF windscreen patch on side window vertical with cable end at top or bottom edge of frame and at least 10cm away from side edges and opposite side of glass to the horizontal patch aerial (2).

Review of http://www.techtir.ie/reviews/mobidtv-dual-usb-dtt dual tuner stick. Allows PIP of any two channels after 2nd Mux starts and true PVR. Windows 7 recommended for full MHEG5 interactive and good GUI.

I'll test it in my car on laptop. Let me know if you can't find these patch antennas to buy that are pictured here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-TV-TUNER-DVB-T-DIGITAL-RECEIVER-BOX-MPEG4-H-264-/190481684869.

This would create ghosting on Analogue. But DTT can use multipath reception to improve the S/N.
It should be OK up to 120km/h (70mph) at least. Above a certain speed the doppler shift and the timing of the ghosting becomes too much for the Inter-symbol timing and the COFDM DSP carrier filter AFC. OFDMA has been used at full speed on German High speed trains.

You really absolutely need at least 3 aerials.
    1) Vertical polarised transmission
2 and 3 ) Two aerials for Horizontal Polarised transmission.

You can't recieve on a whip, dipole, rod or patch aerial along the direction of rod. Hence a Vertical aerial appears to be omni directional as the nulls (dead zones) are above in the sky and below in the road. So for horizontal omni you need a Halo (which are rubbish and not fully omnidirectional), or a "turnstile" (needed for Analogue as it has no ghosting) or two aerials horizontal but at right angles.

This is primitive diversity reception. Mobile phones work because the base station uses two aerial arrays, one -45 degrees and one +45 degress. Mobile voice repeaters, FM and DAB Radio often use vertical to allow omni reception. FM and DAB also may use slant or circular polarisation instead for even better performance because with weather, hills, longer distance the polarisation can be twisted from vertical. Circular polarised transmission is received at 3db loss on receiver with ANY orientation of whip, as long as horizontal is rod is not pointing at mast.
