just a bit stuck on a question on the 2010 paper
give one example of the use of immobilised enzymes in bioreactors
In the answer name the enzyme, the substrate and the product.

I picked antibiotics. But dont know what the enzyme, substrate, product are?
    Any help in advance thanks.

    Think your write
penicillin > acylase > new antibiotics

Correct me on this if I'm wrong.

But you should pick Ethanol (Alcohol)

Glucose -> Starch Amylase -> Ethanol.

    Hope that's right :S

Nope you're mixing up two different processes.

Glucose is acted upon by zymase which is produced by yeast cells to produce carbon dioxide and Ethanol.

/The joys of doing Biology and Chemistry :D

Here's a few answers that you could use

The conversion of Glucose in to its isomer Fructose

    Substrate: Glucose
Enzyme: Glucose Isomerase (The hint's in the name ;))
    Product: Fructose

The creation of new penicllin based antibiotics from natural penicillin produced by microorganisms (Creating semi-synthetic antibiotics). It does by changing the structure of penicillin. I.e. Penicillin G -> Amoxicillin

    Substrate: Penicillin
    Enzyme: Penicillin Acylase
Product: Different structures of Penicillin such as Amoxicillin

The digestion of starch in to simpler sugars

    Substrate: Starch (Amylose)
    Enzyme: Amylase
    Product: Maltose

    The fermentation of Glucose

    Substrate: Glucose
    Enzyme: Zymase
    Product: Ethanol and Carbon Dioxide

It's nearly always easier to keep it simpler and go with which process you know the most about, which would either be starch (substrate) > Amylase (enzyme) > Maltose (product) OR glucose > zymase (yeast) > ethanol.

True that. The best to learn is the conversion of starch in to its simpler sugars as it's an example of digestion.

    Celtic Cross Booklet very good.
Summarizes all experiments down massively but leaves important parts.
Good if you want to find out things like this out, want to know how to build on it in exam though.

Well prepared aye?:p As said, that's all you need.
