Selling a used car

I am looking to sell a used car for cash as I simply cannot afford to run it and haven't much need for it now where I am living.

I dont want to do a trade in, I just want cash.

Where is the best place to do this?

    Is that messy/difficult?

What about those big companies that buy them for cash?

    Anyone know about them?

    donedeal.ie

Only €3 for an add and if it's priced ok folks will find it, anyone looking for a car (sub €10,000) looks there now unless they have their head very firmly up their arse.

    Thanks guys.

So if I sell a car on done deal how does it work. If it turns out that they find fault with it am I responsible?

How do I protect myself from chancers?

An Opel Astra 2006, good nick, just using one car from now on so getting rid of the second.

NCT due next month so providing it passes fully, I want to put it up for sale.

If it hasn't been crashed and there are no known issues with it when you sell it if they come back with "fault" tell them to f oo (politely). You have their cash and the car is sold, chancers don't really have a leg to stand on :)

Like all cash sales, caveat emptor. The seller is not liable. Unless your selling a dodgy, falsified or illegal item, the buyer has little come back. I'm not sure what the steps or requirement involved for legal action are.

My sister used these, and found them good and professional, she just didn't want any hassle or dealing with timewasters, got a reasonable price maybe not as much as if she sold her car directly through an advert, but suited her circumstances.

Currently no sale no fee and free entry 014048500

Seems like a waste of money tbh. Selling your car for less than it's worth while paying someone a couple of hundred quid for the pleasure.

For some people paying a small fee to keep eejits and timewasters away from your residence/private phone is well worth it. Each to their own.
Just look at the amount of threads on here about timewasters, no shows and scammers.

Also buying at auction at least gives you good title to a vehicle.

From the op's first post it looks like they would be more comfortable letting somebody else do the haggling and proper ownership transfer etc etc.

    + 1

If your that not bothered about getting a decent price for it donedeal it with a very low price and a trader will have it off you in a day or two :)

I would like to try donedeal or carzone but I am worried that I may sell it to some scam artist who finds faults in it that weren't there and take me to court or something!

Yeah I was considering those places that buy cars for cash. Are they a total waste of money?

I just dont want buyer hassle. There are a lot of chancers out there.

Private sales aren't covered by consumer law so anyone buying through a private sale does not have anything like the same rights they would buying from a car dealer. The NCA give the information linked below. It doesn't say much about rights in private sales because there isn't much to say.

    http://www.consumerconnect.ie/eng/Hot_Topics/Guides-to-Consumer-Law/Buying-a-car/responsibilities.html

If someone wants to pursue a private seller they can't use the Small Claims Court so they have to go to the District Court and make a solicitor happy.

Try the auctions and set your reserve high
nothing to lose if you end up taking the car back
sure no sale no fee, and if they sell it; you are anonymous to the buyer.

I'd read that bit again. It costs 3 quid to put it on done deal. Any one who buys it off you has no come back if something goes wrong. It's a case of buyer beware. You have pretty much nothing to be worried about as a seller.

For petrolheads that might be true, but for many normal punters the inconvenience and hassle of selling a car oneself - and dealing with potential chancers and sharks - might make the cost worth it.

I see this a lot on these boards - car enthusiasts responding to general enquiries with what they themselves would do as a car person. Two entirely different perspectives on things.

    I'm not a car enthusiast.

if you are worried about someone comming back and annoying you. meet them in a public place and before you put up an advert buy a second sim card to put into an old phone. that way once you sell you will never hear from them again!!
