Isn't "welfare fraud" an oxymoronic phrase...?

what about Ballyconnell, it has a population of 747 yet the number of people claiming welfare payments there reached 1,044,
thats not to mention all the free travel abuse, there was even a prime time special on that

hopefully will get rid of fraud but wont this give more work to drivers after all if the travel pass social welfare card is the same type then how will he be able to check every card flashed in future

    Looks good
Better then the battered piece of cardboard now used.

Article states this will take three years to roll out. It's a big project but I would have thought they could do this sooner

I'm assuming this will have to be validated by the machine on the bus or in the station, otherwise it's a waste of time. Drivers don't inspect passes as it is.

IIRC those statistics were rubbish. The population of Ballyconnell town is 747 but people from the surrounding areas and villages claim the dole at the same place, pushing up the numbers. It's like asking why 20 million people flew through Dublin airport when there are only 1m in Dublin.

presumably, (just guessing), the yellow FT box above the words free travel on the top left corner of the social welfare card is to let the driver know this at a glance

At the risk of makin ye feel even stressed`r....this "innovation" of itself has already imposed quite a significant delay on the "Integrated Ticketing" roll out.

During and after the initial setup of the "Integrated Ticketing Implimentation Group" the then Dept of Social Welfare were notable by their less than fulsome involvement in the process.

It took quite some time, years in fact, before the NEW ! IMPROVED ! Dept of Social Protection or whatever finally announced it would be joining the rest of the country and participating in the Integrated Ticketing project.

However it`s good to see it has finally arrived.

Now it will start to get interesting as,if as it appears, the card will be an RFID "Chipped" one as opposed to the old "Forge-Me Please" piece of cardboard it will entail the withdrawal of the old-pass and it`s replacement with the new.

Unfortunately, this being Ireland,we appear to be plumping for the phased-introduction of the new card, probably to ensure fair-play for forgers and fraudsters everywhere.

What should happen is the entire process should be provisioned to take place within a week and the old style pass rendered worthless after that period.

What is,of course, going to happen is a serious discrepancy arising between genuine old-style passes being exchanged and the actual amount of colouredy paper still being used up and down the Country.....;) ;);)

It would also seem that this card will end the hugely individualistic process of the same Pass-Holder boarding a 0830 46A in Dun Laoire whilst also managing to be on board the 0700 Cork train out of Heuston...truly the end of the bi-location era....a sad day indeed

There are also some interesting discussions regarding the funding methodology which the new card will facilitate as it will render the old "Lump-Sum" payment style redundant and instead allow for operators to charge the DSP on a as-used basis...which of itself will produce some very interesting stats I should think !

    2011 a Space Odessey indeed !!! :)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.
