Is there a place for Irish hip hop?

Okay so The Rubberbandits are considered a sort of irish comedy folk rap duo, I suppose you can compare their act in similarity but non in talent of course to Flight of the Conchords, with Flight of the Conchords obviously being much more talented and universal but you know what I mean. Now the Rubberbandits have kind of paved the way for Irish hip hop to be accepted main stream in the Irish media and they are getting a lot of air time be it tv, radio or newspaper.

Now I get onto my point, because of this "opening the door" for Irish hip hop do you think that we will see a lot more of Irish rapping to come from some serious "artists" and I use the word artist very loosely. Could anyone here come to accept Irish hip hop as popular music here in Ireland? Before you make your mind up watch/listen to this:

It seems that Irish "Hip hop" is just about hating gards, smoking hash and buying a snickers bar. If they rapped about something believable (not shooting 5 n*ggers and and sex with 5 "hoes" all at the same time) with decent prodution not just jonno on the beat box then Irish hip hop might make it into the top 100, a big might!

Thats more the genre (Wannabe) Gangstar rap than Hip Hop, which is crap no matter what country it comes from.

    Indeed they were

Also for this thread they are going to disappoint those who wont to slag hip/hop as they never talk about violence or hoes.

Just good rhymes (messiah J) put to a very good sound by a producer DJ (The expert) also for their last live shows they were using two guitaists which was very good to watch.

Its the DJ/Producer type hip hop I like the most.

Realllllllly don't like the gangsta hip hop which only talks about b*ches and hoes and popping yo a*s and drugs and all of that crap.
Don't like Kayne and Timbaland style over produced crap either.

I really don't think rapping goes with an inner city Dubin accept. It just comes off as beign too whiney.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Things have changed, we now use rashers as elbow pads and we now consider a spoon an animal, we even milk it. So you don't know everything

I like hip hop/rap but I dont think it sounds too good with an Irish accent.Maybe its just because we are so conditioned to hearing rap with an american accent or even an east end london accent that anything else just sounds kinda alien.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭shofukan

IMO Irish Rap & Hip Hop works as parody or comedy.
As legitimate music.. Not so much.

They have slightly more music credibility than the coronas and blizards but overall they're still pretty p!iss poor.

    Good live however!

I'd argue German actually works pretty well with rap/hiphop (there's a massive scene for it over here):

Then again, I just really like this video :pac:

There is also a very big French hip hop scene but I think most of this is built on the african immigrant population and their descendants and is obviously centered around paris.

+1 on Messiah J and the Expert, Bloodrush was a great tune, and made it onto a film soundtrack.

So did this song, another one of Irish hip-hop's better moments, IMO

These guys aren't bad. When it's done well...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ2cv75G9i0&feature=related

Saw these guys live too, and they were a "band", as in they played instruments as well as rapping. Kind of like the Roots or BEastie Boys.

People don't seem to have a problem with French language rap, such as MC Solaar, or UK rap such as Roots Manuva? Is it because people can't take white Irish people rapping, or is just ok if they are black, be they American, UK, or French? Or should they come from big cities in order to have the "street cred"?

I mean, people don't have a problem with Irish rock or metal bands, some of which is very American sounding. (The Answer being one rock band..) As long as people use their own accents and are honest about what they are singing about, then I don't see a problem with it.
I suppose rap is very urban American, which maybe why it gets ridiculed outside the USA.
