I think they can weasel out of it by saying that Chartis do provide cover to men, at least that's the argument that Zurich gave me over LadyStar...

Why dont you ring them up and ask them for a quote?

Prove it you sexist morons. The day that women actually do something so fundamental to road safety as looking for oncoming traffic before entering the roundabout is the day they can spout off this fantastical bollixology.

Discrimination occurs when you are treated less favourably than another person is, has been or would be treated because of your:
    Gender
    Marital status
    Family status
    Religion
    Sexual orientation
    Age
    Disability
Race (including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins) or
    Membership of the Traveller community.

Not the point. but if it makes you feel any better, I'm a woman and they are giving me higher quotes than others

Discrimination is allowed in society despite the existing laws.
Schools are allowed to discriminate on the basis of religion.
Golf clubs are allowed to discriminate on the basis of something or other (legal precedent IIRC).
Employers pretty much discriminate against disabled people.
Most of us discriminate against travellers.
Insurance companys can discriminate on the nasis of "statistics"

Ah but you see, this is gender discrimination and as long as its not portraying women as sexual objects/idiots/dangers to life then its perfectly OK.

Insurers are allowed discriminate in premium costs if they can actuarially back it up; but as far as I know they are not allowed to refuse a quote on the listed grounds.

Please don't post generalisations like this; we (rightly) get a lot of complaints each and every time people post stuff like this.

Agreed. It is genderist and unacceptable unless it favours females. DarkJager ought to know better.

No. And don't call me Shirley.

I'm not condoning the marketing exercise that the OP has mentioned (and that's all it is), but comments like yours piss off a lot of people; quite understandably too.

Post some statistics to prove your point; that will do a lot more for the debate.

I've gotten quotes off them for my insurance, and they are horrifically expensive, usually at least the fourth or fifth most expensive.

But I don't see why they piss off people, and more specifically - what gender is doing the complaining? I think its a pretty valid point that I made and one which any driver out there who watches and sees bad driver behaviour on a daily basis knows exactly what I'm talking about. I really wish I had solid stats for such a common and noticed occurence on the roads, only to slap the RSA and insurers like the one mentioned in the OP across the face with it.

I'm not trying to drag this off topic so please don't read me wrong, but I feel its a valid arguement. This type of marketing also pisses a lot of people off and it should be torn apart and discussed. It deserves nothing less.

I don't see how I can be any clearer to be honest, but PM me if you still don't understand why I am asking you not to make statements like this:
The day that women actually do something so fundamental to road safety as looking for oncoming traffic before entering the roundabout
This type of marketing also pisses a lot of people off and it should be torn apart and discussed.

Yes, it should absolutely discussed and torn apart if they're not backing up their claims. But making comments like you did is not the way to do it.

Now, please let's get back on topic and try and stick to facts.

im just wondering where this is all going..women only insurance..is it a woman only company? discriminating against men on every level..employees..board room etc..whats the deal? If there was a website/company/club or whatever that was men only and advertised as men only..there would be uproar (and rightly so).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Listen, they're a business selling a product. Gillette sell women's razor blades and men's razor blades - they're probably 99% identical apart from the packaging. That's all this is.

The same company also run 25plus.ie - it's the same product marketed differently.

Not that private clubs have any relevance to this, but yes - they can pick their own members. The High Court recently upheld Portmarnock Golf Club's right to only allow men as members.

yep my mother got a woeful quote and they wouldn't quote me because of my penalty points!

It's one of those things. It's like golf courses only allowing men. Ford car insurance only insuring ford drivers. It's also a case of get over it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭Paparazzo

It's purely a marketing gimmick. They're hoping women will go with them because they're being offered a special deal. Any woman with sense will shop around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭celica1994

I think its funny, if there was a "mens only" car insurance company opened tomorrow in ireland youd never hear the end of it!

+1, if they managed at all to be cheaper than "normal" companies the feminists would come down on them like a ton of bricks.

Wasn't there some sort of court ruling recently that insurance companies were not allowed discriminate on a gender basis? Not that that will change anything, sure they just use statistics.

I am with them for a few years now, always have worked out the cheapest, have a male as a named driver on my policy too!!!

well think about this.. imagine a statistic came out tomorrow stating that men are better drinkers then women and then certain pubs in town decided only to sell drink to men becuase men are statistically safer drinkers, i dont think it would go down too well lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Again, the same company (MCL Insurance Services Ltd) do sell an insurance product that they sell to men. So in your analogy, the pub would actually be selling drinks to both men and women; but just advertising it differently.

I'm all for the likes of the statistics and messages from the RSA to be scrutinised and challenged, but I think this is really a fuss over very little.

jesus what a fuss over nothing...

A eoin said previously look at gillette razors... when they bring out a pink only for women razor.. you dont get your knickers in a twist....
this is the same thing .... targetted marketing.. thats all.. nothing sexist or anything...

The notion that there is no discrimination is silly.
The under-represented and minority groups are not only equal, but will, more and more, receive preferential treatment.
Anti discrimination laws mean that you cannot discriminate against non-Caucasians, women, Muslims, disabled people, old people and gays.
That means that if you're white, male, catholic, able bodied, young and straight you can be discriminated against by everyone without any problem.

Also, I wonder if female only insurance would apply in case of sex change?
I have a feeling they would fight that one all the way to Europe.

It's more than just a gimmick, soon you will be loaded for your age and just wait till they find statistics that maybe black, gay Muslims are better drivers and you will have to declare you're white, straight and christian and have your premium loaded by 25%.
Insurance companies don't give a sh*t about who or what you are, they only give a sh*t about how they can come up with excuses to screw you for more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,622 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

If it's any consolation, women are discriminated against when it comes to buying a pension with a lump sum (an annuity) because they live longer.

There's all sorts of 'discrimination' in motor insurance, not least the loading that young male drivers get stuffed with but you can hardly argue against the statistics when you read the papers every Monday.

Aren't Men better (safer) drinkers than women? Man, there goes my cred .... always used that in any Man versus Woman argument .... was CONVINCED it was a winner every time. Now, I am not so sure anymore ....... :P
