Bigotry and hypocrisy within the homosexual community?

I've heard, and over heard, racism, sexism, classism and transphobia within the gay community many times. I've experianced transphobia first hand myself as has my partner. It strikes me as ironic and strange how a sub culture who has experianced bigotry and discrimination in the past, and to a lesser degree in the present, could be so oblivious to said hypocrisy, as well as lacking in empathy. Of course I'm not talking about the gay community as a whole but it does exist as a sizable minority. What are your theories regarding this?

Personally I believe it is down to a negative aspect of human nature, compensatory narcissism. People need to look down on others in order to feel good about themselves. Thirty years ago gays had few, if any rights, and were socially reviled.
Things have speedily improved for gays in terms of rights and social acceptance. Now it feels good to be socially accepted and even better to look down upon those who today are in the position gays were thirty years ago. Classic example is how in the past straight people would sneer at scientific evidence which suggested a biological compenent to homosexuality but now some gays do the exact same thing to transsexuals, people with conditions such as aspergers syndrome, as well as exhibiting little empathy and being judgemental towards people with social phobia, clinical depression, extreme introverts, the traveller community, immigrants, the socially disadvantaged etc.

I really think some people within the gay community need to have a good hard look at themselves.

Sorry but "you've heard"? Is that all the evidence that you have? Perhaps you would like to provide some concrete examples before you make such outrageous claims.

Of course some gay people are going to be racist/sexist etc, that doesn't mean that every gay person is prejudice.

The OP did not say every gay person is prejudiced. Please read back on what he actually said.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It's the basic implication of the OPs post though, particularly given the thread title.

And anyway, I wanted to point that there are many gay people that are racist and so on, but that doesn't mean all gay people are like that.

Edit: "sizeable minority". Please, has the OP had conversations about social issues with every member of the gay community to make such an outrageous statement.

    Everyone agrees on that already

So you can't back up anything you've written with concrete evidence?

I've heard it, experianced it and viewed it. It exists and is a cancer within the gay community. Obviously I don't take pictures and record sounds every time I go into a gay bar, nor am I going to spend my entire day browsing through Gaire and other forums to convince you of this sad truth.

what sort of concrete evidence are you looking for exactly? And why? You have just admitted yourself that some gay people are racist - did you have any concrete evidence before making this assertion?

I didn't create a thread entitled "Bigotry and hypocrisy within the homosexual community ".

and? What's your point? Do you not understand the difference between 'in' and 'within'?

    You've missed his point entirely.

Seriously though, a discussion about bigotry within the LGBT community (and I'm not gonna leave the T out of this either, some of the most nasty things said to me by anyone was from another trans people) is certainly worth having, maybe now is not the best time?

Maybe a cooling off period over recent events would be for the best, maybe now is the time to go for the jugular. I honestly don't know. I do have confidence that Johnny and Rainbow Kirby are working behind the scenes to prevent the double standards between the treatment of gays and transgenders occuring again on this forum.

Regardless, I justed felt compelled to make my point and highlight this disgusting hypocrisy. I really hope it will give some people food for thought.
