    Anyone ever try this?

I'm thinking about taking it up in the new year.

Aside from being something I've been interested in for a while, it seems like a great way to keep feet. Really fit judging by basically everyone that does it.

    Any thoughts?

Seems like a good way to get fit alright if you think you'll enjoy it. There's a parkour forum. Would you like me to move this thread there?

    1) You run around and jump over things.
    2) ??????
    3) Fitness.
    :D

Its an activity which involves running, jumping, climbing and stuff.
Doing loads of that will probably get you fit alright.

I'd imagine it's a great way to absolutely smash yourself up...

Like if you wanna do it cos you think you'll enjoy it - go for it.

If you want to just get fit... probably better avenues to pursue.

To be honest I had that same opinion when I first heard about Parkour. 'A bunch of idiots jumping over walls and off buildings' but it's a lot more disciplined than that.

It's non competitive and safety is emphasized 100%.

For instance, before attempting any kind of jump you're supposed to do it hundreds of times over on ground level etc...

I won't be going for any of the too crazy stuff though. More so picking a path and moving through it in Industrial estates etc...

It's hard to explain but there are tonnes of youtube videos...

It's also important to understand the distance between Parkour and Freerunning. Free running is more about tricks and stunts. Where as parkour is about minimal effort in traveling in a straight line through obstacles.

I'd hook up with a place that coaches gymnasts before I tried anything like that. I know some guys in the States who are really into it and they started training in gymnastics before they even hit grade school. It requires a lot of endurance, but more importantly a lot of connective tissue stability and strength. As Hanley said, it may be good stuff but it's a great way to hurt yourself if you don't know what you're doing. Starting out right with a coach would be a great way to get into it without any worries.
