Air rifle or some lad with good Jack Russels would sort the rats best of all.

My dad told me that once he loaded some shells with soya beans very effective in sheds and what not. Just make sure you wear goggles.

What about a .22 with bird shot
It's a .22 case filled with tiny balls of lead and closed like a shotgun catridge, great for shooting in sheds they won't damage the sheeting
    I use them for pigeons

Rat poison, traps or cages would be a better option than guns because they get clever when you start shooting them and they start to stay out of sight!:D

what about using a ferrete? your name implies it: do you use them yourself? anyway i know a chap that got a couple of ferretes a few years ago. he kept them in a barn that always had rats and mice around the place (barn was used to store horse feed) but since he got the ferretes he clames there isnt a rodent to be seen:cool:

Get a cat. Best thing we ever did. Never have to feed the cat, it looks after itself. never comes into the house and havent seen a rat in years.

That's true actually, you can't go wrong with a cat, the best solution for rats and mice!:D

Subsonic 24 gram 12gauge ammunition could be an option for you.

It is still a potent shotshell but is much softer than a standard 12g load on both sound and impact.

Will have plenty of power to kill rats.

Apparently rats are terrified of the smell of ferrets. We get a lad up to run his ferrets throughout the sheds at times. If the rat smells the ferret he wont go into the shed. Maybe an old wives tail but works for us. Another thing to do if they are in the cavities is to take a blade of a chainsaw and add a length of hose to the exhaust and smoke them out. Couple of lads with sprongs and terriers and you will have a few hours of fun anyway;)

Second that:D used to run my ferrets threw pigeon lofts for my mates years ago and wasn't a rat to be seen. If you dont want to lose your ferret take its shavings or bedding and sprinkle it all over the place, the smell alone will stop the rats coming in. Also you have Cat and a Terrier you say and you have a rat problem:eek: , very strange are they inside pets? if so maybe lock them in there at night

the old tack and stable lads around here always swore by the shotgun, the rats they claimed did not understand it, for mumbers of them to be blown to pieces, they usually abandoned ship after a couple of goes, even on the outside.

I get them in Waterford outdoor & angling ( John O Brien )

    try a 2" 410 gauge cartridge

Was going to suggest that but the OP doesn't have a .410. Does anyone know the status of inserts?

The OP doesn't have a .22, but i got rat shot in Mullingar, Lakeland shooting centre, €14 a box. Never used it. I don't want to go off topic but will it kill rats? Pigeons are weaker game.

don't know if it will kill rats, i never used it on them
its not great for pigeons either, it will knock them and then i kill them on the ground
I think it might have something to do with the rifleing in the barrel
and the way it spreads the shot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,072 ✭✭✭clivej

Ratshot is for use in small places and when the son tried some out it had a spread of an A4 sheet of paper @20yards. Not so good at the longer ranges.

DO NOT use the ratshot with a mod on the rifle it spreads out quickly.

Rats are easy to kill - one hit and they will go down so the ratshot will work

I found that it patterned like a donut in my .22

+1, light slow load designed for clay shooting if I'm not mistaken.

The simple way to do it would be to construct a backstop, put a bait point in front of it and just blast away with whatever you have. Make the backstop out of fertiliser bags (or coal bags or whatever) filled with sand. Stick on a pair of plugs then a pair of muffs and away you go.
