    Hi, How are things?

I've got loads of dvds coupled with a large nas box Qnap ts410Y with 2.8TBs free so ive got loads of space, Basically i want to backup my dvd & blu ray collection onto the NAS box to stream around the house to my Telly, Xbox, Ps3, nintendo Wii & a couple of Pcs, So far i've been saving my dvds in wmv which is fine for dvds but im thinking i need something a bit better maybe h.264 ? Would this work with all my devices? Will they be able to play this back without transcoding?

Oh almost forgot all pcs are windows based, Windows 7 ultimate, XP & win2K

    Thanks

    For Blu-ray you definitely need a wireless N network...wireless G etc just doesn't cut it for high-def.
I've recently set up my synology NAS for the same purpose and barring one or two hiccups along the way it's all plain sailing now :)
Give us an example of your network and how you have it wired, whether ethernet or wireless or both etc
And Backing up blu-rays to a high def format is a major pain in the ass...you have to use about 5 bloody apps to rip/convert/align audio etc and subtitles...

Your best bet is h264 video aac audio in a mp4 container, it has the best all round support. The Wii and other lower powered devices may not be able to handle the better h264 profiles so you need to be mindful of that if you intend to play on those devices. Additionally I've been very unimpressed with the subtitle support with devices implementing mp4, so if you need subtitles you need to hardcode them.

If you have the space to spare, what about iso files for the bluray?

I wonder if there is a dvdshrink type software for bluray to shrink special features etc...

Thanks for the replies folks, Have the space aright 1.7TB at the moment but im hoping to get as long as possible without upgrading the hdds in it, most important is something simple as Im the only one at home in any handy at a computer everyone else can just about turn them on
