To many stations on the DART line

Is there to many stations on the dart line and if we removed a few it could speed up the service.

e.g would be Tara Street. Is there a real need for this stop. Since it is only a few mins walk from connolly and pearse.

Sandymount is another only a few mins from lansdowne rd and sydney parade.

Sure there are a few other stops which maybe removed to speed up the service

Tara Street is apparently either the second or third busiest station on the entire network (not just DART)...

Agree. IMO it's the closest to the busiest parts of the city

People value predictability more than speed.

If the trains arrive on time then you can plan around it.
I'd rather the option of getting off closer to where I wanted to go than save 2 minutes on the journey time.

For those that can remember the good old pre Dart days, we once had a speedy service without all those unnesessary stops. :p

    Bray
    Killiney
    Dalkey
    Glenageary
    Sandycove
    Dunlaoghaire
    Seapoint
    Blackrock
    Sydney Parade. (1972)
    Lansdown Road
    Tara St
    Connolly.

Indeed. And Tara Street was usually closed on weekends. Dublin-Howth was operated as a separate service, from Inset Platform 4 at Connolly; there were no stations until Killester. (These were also the days when Carlisle Pier Station in Dun Laoghaire was still in service for the boat trains, which were able to run non-stop from Connolly all the way through without worrying about being caught behind any local suburban trains.)

Of course, there are other options to speed up journeys, such as skip-stop service where alternating trains serve every other station (e.g. first train serves Grand Canal Dock, Sandymount, Booterstown etc. to terminus while second train serves Lansdowne Road, Sydney Parade, Blackrock etc., but all trains still serve Dun Laoghaire and city centre stations), faster acceleration/deceleration (which can put more wear and tear on rolling stock depending on durability of components), carefully-timed express services (of course, any express service would be easier with more than two tracks...so this begs the question as to what happened to proposals to quadruple-track the Northern Line? which would not cause "years of disruption" if done right...CIE/IE seems to not get the concept of a "shoo-fly").

BTW, both predictability and speed are equally valuable. It's nice to have a service that you know exactly when it's coming, but kinda useless if you're going to take as long to get from Bray to the city centre as one would on a bicycle...

Now this thread has me wondering why the DART line was never elevated through Ballsbridge and Sandymount; it's still at grade, with several level crossings. It could have even co-incided with the building of Aviva Stadium.

If they eliminated much of the unnecessary DMU service along this route it would help speed things up. :p

People value predictability more than speed.
People on the outer fringes would appreciate less stops.

Generally morning and evening travellers are not looking to go from one residential area to another.

seapoint is another that is never busy, even at rush hour

    Did nothing stop at Pearse??

I believe the poster was being sarcastic, presumably the old Southern regional services ran from Wicklow County to Pearse. Though I cannot imagine Bray and Dun Laoghaire not having services.

Yes, it would have been useful to raise some of the line in conjunction with the Lansdowne Road redevelopment, but it would be immensely disruptive and suffer from huge numbers of objections.

But what if I want to go from station 2 to station 5? the existing pattern of some Maynooth / other suburban services serving Bray, Dalkey, Dun Laoghaire, Blackrock, Sydney Parade, Lansdowne, etc. is probably more useful - the stops with the most people getting on and off get the most trains.

If you think this is a problem with the dart, its lucky you don't use the luas red line

With a lot of the central stations they are useful to dissipate the number of passengers boarding and alighting. That is probably Tara's main use. Pearse is busy enough, as is Connolly, without adding all of Tara's passengers between the two.
