Bought both this from dealextreme, winds into itself and comes with a USB cable too Then got this off ebay.

Both better value, and both working perfectly for me.

Edit: FYI, that one you linked to in the OP is the old HTC charger. Last HTC I know of to support that charger was the Hero, but all Desires, Desire HDs, Zs, Wildfire, and Samsung Galaxy S etc are all the new smaller charger as ive linked in this post.

You would want to ensure that your car charger can give at least 1A@5V.
For a phone like the HTC Nexus One needs up to 2A from the charger to charge the phone at a decent rate while your using the SatNav function. Thing to keep in mind when buying cheap chargers, most will only give the min 0.5A.

hmm i was wondering why it was taking so long to charge the battery in the car, would charging via one of these be bad for the battery

As with all in car electronics, it should be fine once the engine is ticking over/running.

Id be more worried about your phones battery. make sure these cheap chargers have the built in overload/overcharge/backflow protection.
Some dont and will probably destroy your phone battery within a few months.

keep in mind that most phone manufacturers only cover batteries for 6 months under warranty.

Just saw the thread, I bought this on ebaY about a month ago, wasnt sure about it but it was only about €3.50. I have to say very impressed it certainly is genuine and for an item being delivered from Hong Knong it only took about a week. Lights up with htc logo even. Id recommend, and for that price not much to lose.

I bought this for my hero 2 months ago from a different seller. It definitely was not htc oem. Broke within 3 days. Got a refund from seller. He said some batches had any issue with one of the metal wires in the usb head.

almost all new phones use the same data & charging cable now which is a microUSB charger so if you buy any new phones or electronics they will likely have this charging plug/socket.

it's the one on the right.

    mini-micro-usb-connector.jpg

afaik, almost any phone made since february 2010 will have this connection, so it should be pretty common by now and i have a portable 2.5" hard disk that has the same connection as well as my wife's new kindle ebook reader.

there are a wealth of chargers available on ebay and other online stores to allow you to charge via USB and the devices themselves are designed to allow the lower voltages of computer USB sockets to charge them, albeit more slowly than the faster mains chargers, so an in-car charger should be no problem either.

i have 3 or 4 straight through USB to microUSB cables that all charge both my phones and kindle fine and supply enough power to spin up my USB hard drive.

Samsung Jet and Orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade both use these microUSB connectors too if anyone is interested

    to vibe666 post above:
The charging connection is the same but the chargers vary wildly. Most will charge any battery but i bet the battery lifespan will vary with different chargers.

Also iv noticed some bits of gear are starting to use the Active chargers only. E.g. for charging a PS3 controller u need a ps3/ computer/active charger. They wont charger with a standard passive usb connection.

Also mini to micro adapters are readily available so dont go throwing out ur mini usb chargers yet
