Motorists caught with up to 10 mph over the limit will have the option of taking up a day course costing £100 rather than receiving a £60 fine and three penalty points.

Is this a good idea and would it work in Ireland?

I would think that the way that this latest campaign is promoted as a safety campaign rather than a revenue earning campaign it should be brought in here. It would also create employment offering these courses.

The US has a similar program for drink driving except the course lasts a week.

Seems like a sensible option for bring caught just over the limit, so will never happen here then.

If it did the course would cost £200, last two days and be done through FAS. :p

If you allow people to buy their way out of getting points then what are you left with? Points for poor people?

Tbh, if you can't take a 100 euro hit for breaking the law your beyond poor and wouldn't have a car in the first place.
