Hi I have a Desire HD. I was told you could save Google map data to you SD card to stop data charges when your abroad. Is this true. I have tried to get this to work but I can't figure out how. Thanks

Desire HD has it's own offline GPS app, doesn't it?

not sure what the new desire hd comes with that the old desire doesn't, but the new google maps caches data offline. not sure exactly how it works though.

If its not cache'ing it on the phone then it must be automatically doing it on the SD card without needing to configure it. Does anyone know if that is the case? Its still nearly 10mb on the phone which is massive, how did developers let that happen?

i'm not sure where it caches but i'm pretty sure it must be the sd card given the size my cache has gone and i don't seem to have lost any more phone memory. the app itself does have a massive (relatively speaking and all that) footprint on the phone memory though.

in my google maps i go to menu > more > cache settings and the description on the "clear map tile cache" button says something like "current cache size is 22meg ....".

Google maps for android was recently changed from using images to using vectors, so it's way less data intensive. If you browse around your local city it should be able to recall most of the map without using an internet connection
