    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone who has the new Apple tv has had any problems connecting to their library?

I've tried a number of things but my library just won't show up on it.
I think it's probably the router I have.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Did you check your firewall to make sure iTunes is enabled? I use the standard firewall that Is with vista and iTunes was not ticked by default.

Yeah, I use the firewall on my macbook and itunes is set to allow all incoming connections.

It's a router problem. Dad has same problem. Router?

same problem here. I've the new black eircom router. I suspect it may be blocking a port. Has any one got it working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Don't think our router is blocking a port, we've had so much wifi trouble since we got it. Reckons it's just a bad configuration on our end (which I also have no idea how to fix)

    But yes. Want home sharing!

i'm going to try connecting pc and apple tv to a small hub to see if that works. This should help identify the problem.

I had a similar issue - ended up turning off sharing, renaming the library and turning sharing back on.

I have the same problem getting the APTV2 to connect to my Itunes Library which is on a PC running win7. I think the trouble is definately in the Eircom router not letting the connections through. I have tried everything with firewalls on and off and routing through the proper ports...no joy...also cant get Airplay to work through Iphone4 or Ipad to stream content to the APTV2..Helllllllpppppp.:)

    And did this sort it?

    I'm having similar trouble.
Movies and youtube etc working fine
I simply cannot get the computer/library visible on atv Or on iphone 3g, 3gs, itouch 2nd gen using remote app

    and ive tried the following:
Turned everything on and off in various orders.
    Checked Network settings
    Checked login
Opened a new TCP port 3689
Opened a new UDP port 5353 .....not sure if i needed the ports but tried it anyway
Turned off firewalls on pc and router
turned off anti virus just in case
    reinstalled Itunes reinstalled bonjour
dicked about with the eircom router till i was blue in the face - giving direct mac address access etc.

If anyone comes across a solution please post

    Hi,

I'm almost certain it is not a Port Forwarding issue.

Per Apple's KB (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3509), "If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computer and Apple TV. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with other copies of iTunes."

Port Forwarding only applies from LAN to WAN or vice versa. You are doing a LAN to LAN connection.

Have you tried using TCPView (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437) to check that your PC is listening on TCP 3689 and UDP 5353?

I have a Zyxel but I don't use it. I don't have any Port Forwarding setup. My Apple TV has worked perfectly from Day 1 and I have full access to my iTunes Library from the Apple TV (Music, Movies, Photos etc). In TCP View, iTunes can be clearly seen listening on TCP 3689 and mDNSResponder (part of Apple Bonjour network service) can be seen listening on UDP 5353.

If you check this and they are listening, and your Windows firewall is off, try connecting the Apple TV and watch for an entry in TCP View, showing the IP of your Apple TV establishing a connection. I have an established connection right now between Apple TV and iTunes.

If you are not getting a connection or if you don't get the listening ports, check your Windows Services for Apple specific services, make sure they are running, re-check and disable the Windows firewall and any other software firewall on your PC and re-check.

Beyond that, an iTunes re-installation could fix it (if it is a corrupt installation of Bonjour etc), Power Management / Hibernation is unlikely to be the issue but worth checking. Check Power Management specifically on your PC Network card and make sure any options to "allow the PC to turn this device off" are disabled. Check your firewall rules within your Router to make sure there are no LAN to LAN specific rules. Is your PC connected wirelessly or wired to the router (mine is wired)? Factory resetting the Apple TV and re-entering the iTunes account details might solve it if is an authentication issue - the iTunes account of the PC and the Apple TV need to be identical. I suppose it is possible but unlikely that this is corrupted on the Apple TV and that's why it fails to connect.

I hope this sorts your issue.

I too am having the same issues. 2 pcs, a laptop and apple tv in the house. All on wirelss and none can see each others iTunes, not showing up in the shared or devices list on itunes. I wired in the laptop to the black eircom router and then I could access one of the itunes librarys from the laptop but not the other way around. Any one able to help?

A friend is having same problem. Will a different router sort the problem or do you have to use the eircom router??

I had the same problem again with a black eircom router. I plugged in my old router sweex I think and bang it worked straight away. If anyone knows how to sort out the eircom router I'd appreciate it.

    Hi,

Did anybody manage to get their Homeshare working?

I have a Vodafone router (Huawei 556a), and using TCP view, 5953 does not seem to be doing anything at all.

I dont suppose there is anybody out there who could help me.

    folks,

    same problem here,

apple tv will not see my imac,

    eircom router, any advice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭RobY

The problem may be with "Windows Firewall With Advanced Security"

See http://forum.tipb.com/apple-tv-forum/199981-problems-homesharing.html#post1632669 for details on a solution that worked for someone.

For anyone else having this problem, can you list your OS, whether Windows Firewall (or Mac equivalent) is turned on and what other security software you have installed (Zone Alarm, Norton etc.).

    @RobY,
    Thanks for the great responses.
XP sp3, AVG free, Windows Firewall.

Following your earlier post I have downloaded TCPview.
I can see that iTunes has 3689 open and listening however the remote and local addresses are listed as 0.0.0.0
    also
mDNSResponder (Bonjour?) has 5353 listed but the State has no entry (listening Close_wait Established etc.) and the IP's are listed as *

However 5353 does have bytes and packets sent and received - this would lead me to believe its open and they've bounced off something .....
    back to eircom router?

ok...silly question and a bit off the thread but seeing as I haven't got anything to successfully work on my home share I don't know what iTunes should look like when it's working.....

Should I be able to see wireless connected devices in the side bar on the left hand side of iTunes e'g Apple TV, Airplay Speakers, iPhone & iPod with remote app installed??????

This is really frustrating....i feel like i'm missing out on the best functionallity of these devices :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::confused::mad:

Ok. Make sure to enable the first two options in TCPView, show unconnected endpoints and resolve addresses. 0.0.0.0 is a wildcard ip address. It means "listen on all network interfaces". If a connection is made on port 3689, it will be handed off to another process and that will have the remote ip address of your atv.

Try and eliminate windows firewall and AVG. Turn windows firewall and AVG off. Might be best to unplug the phone line from your router while you do this. Can you see iTunes? Do you see a connection in TCPView?

With the phone line still unplugged, log into the modem and turn off its firewall, if you can. Now, can you see Apple TV? What about TCPView?

In answer to your other post, I don't see any Wireless devices in iTunes, even when Apple TV is connected.

I was considering buying the latest Apple Tv from their website in the next few days but all this talk of problems is putting me off.

Are the problems people are having isolated? Is anyone getting it to work properly? Should I buy one or not? It looks like a great product.

I got one at Christmas, have broadband with Eircom with their router, and it worked perfectly straight away.

After about 2 months of looking at my apple tv sitting idle and trying everything i could think of to get it to talk to all the computers in the house, i found a solution.

I bought a cheap wireless access point, plugged it into my eircom router, disabled wireless on the eircom router and BINGO everything working perfectly.

Its all down to the setting on the Eircom router...either replace it with another router or add another router to it to act as a bridge. I did this and immediately had Itunes sharing with Apple TV2 and Ipad and Iphone working as remote and also using them to Airplay media back to TV...Brilliant...:D

come on some body has to be able to figure out the deal with vga black eircom router.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

Havent figured out what the problem is with the Eircom black router but I added a second router in bridge mode and connected the devices to that and it all works now.

My solution is to get a second router and connect that in brudge mode, an added advantage of this is that if you get a better router than the eircom then you will improve the streaming speeds on your LAN.
