Is it possible for universities (and businesses) to find out if you were on the dole?

Do you have to be upfront about this? Say there was a time period of your life where you were on the dole, but for the sake of appearance, or whatever, you didn't want to mention it on a CV - can they find out you were on the dole?

Specifically, I'm referring to a university interview. If they ask you "so what did you do during the months March to November?" do you have to tell them you were on the dole? And secondly, can they ask you how much you were receiving?

    Just say you went traveling?

Tens of thousands go traveling every year and I don't mean emigration here

I think being honest is the best policy here, lots of people are going through hard times and its nothing to be ashamed of, just make sure if asked that you turn it into a positive, i.e. you were upskilling with a short course, self study or something.

You don't have to tell them.
    They can't find out.
Even if you told them you claimed the dole, they will not ask how much you were receiving and you wouldn't have to tell them.

I had "gap" on my CV. Got advice from a well informed person in HR/Recruitment. She said to just put it in as a "Career break"
This is a personal reason and under current legislation any HR person worth their salt will not touch it with a barge pole!

But having said that there is no shame in being unemployed!
There are over 400 thousand of us signing on :(

It all depends on the level of the job required. Mentioning the dole if looking for a senior job would look bad and may militate against you giving a good impression.
If it is a junior level job or in trades or starting out post grad then a bit of time on the dole is acceptable but I would minimise it and try to put some slant on it like doing courses etc...

Higher up the food chain it looks like you got fired or some other underlying personal problem caused an issue and you got fired and it will cause more questions
