Info on reinstatement of Driving Licence

    Hi All

    I was arrested in Feb 2008 for drink driving and dangerous driving obtaining three years off the road for each offence to run concurrently. I was convicted in early July 2008 which is roughly one and a half years ago. My question is this, Can I apply to get my licence reinstated after one and half years of my three years.

    I desperately need a car for my job and it is proving very hard to be without my car as of late. I am extremely remorseful of my actions and have learned considerably as a result of my loss of licence. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated

    The short answer to you question is NO,
    See here Road Traffic Act 2006 Section 7 Removal of disqualification

    The long answer, you can apply to the court for restoration after serving half your sentence of disqualification but licence can not be restored until you served two-thirds of the disqualification.

    You can apply to have it restored after having served two years (in fact you can apply earlier than that but it will take effect only after having served the two years off the road).

    Cheers for the replies. I know that I could apply now but it will not take effect until july 2011 when I have completed 2 years of the three. Will the fact that I was convicted of dangerous driving aswell affect the courts decsion to reinstate my licence?

    No one can really answer that question it depends on the judge on the day, also the Gardai could object as well.

    The answer to that question is actually 'Yes', that is one of the factors the court will consider in coming to a decision as to whether or not to remove the disqualification, i.e. whether or not the applicant was convicted of other Road Traffic Offences arising from the Same incident.
