Sending € via paypal - with sender paying fees

I may be slightly off topic here (please move if there's a more appropriate section) but here goes.

If someone is sending money by paypal - as a personal transaction (ie. no commerce involved - just the transfer of € between friends), sometimes they get the option to pay paypal fees and sometimes they don't. I am trying to work out what circumstances are different to bring about each case?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Also, get them to choose the 'gift' option ;)

Thanks for replying folks. So if the receiver finds that transaction fees have been deducted, then its clear that the sender has NOT selected 'personal' & 'gift'. Is that correct?

If they're sending money as "gift" straight from their paypal balance its free, if they're charging a debit or credit card to send the personal payment then fees apply as far as I know.

Also, I think there "cross border" fees in some cases. So if you're receiving money from a different country then that might be the reason you're getting charged.

Someone might correct me if I'm wrong.

When sending a gift payment, the payer has the option of paying the fees. someone always pays the fees though, there is no option to avoid them.

You can both avoid them if there is money already in your PayPal balance
