This seems like a good deal?

    Hi everyone.

Like many others I am sure, I am checking out what New Year deals there are to be had online and in the papers, and I have stumbled across this one:

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Z560_988428.html

I'll be honest, it's a bit above what I had originally budgeted for, but for the price it does seem good. I'm not really a gamer as such, but I might want to get the odd one in the future. I might therefore be getting more "spec" than I need. Would the superior specs in this one (compared to, say, the Core i3 machines that are currently available for the €500 - €600 range, what I was originally looking at) be worth the extra buck or two from the point of view of internet multitasking and watching movies etc (plan to hook it up to the HD telly)?

Also, is it my imagination or does it look a bit clunky?

I thought if the above Lenovo was offering more than I really need, the Acer Aspire 5742 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004EBUX12/ref=s9_al_bw_ir03?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1DEM2VFTYDHSRTNQM5E0&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=223841987&pf_rd_i=514938031) should be enough for what I want. And a good deal cheaper...

Thoughts, opinions, advice and experience always welcome.

    Cheers all, and Happy Christmas.

JUST get the cheapest one, the aspire is grand for movies ,net browsing etc the top one may be more powerful, but its likely to be louder too ,more power= more cooling= louder fan noise.and the top one has glossy screen, thats bad for movies and web use.

Dazz on these boards gave me a link to the same website for the Toshiba Pro L670-14P. After the sale price and the Toshiba £100 cashback offer, I'll be paying approx €600. Same laptop is nearly 900 euro on other sites. Excellent specs. Gonna place the order tomorrow.

That Toshiba offer is deadly, really great value. The annoying thing for me is the fact it's a 17'' screen - I'll need to be lugging it around with me for work as well, so I think I'd be mad to get one that big. Otherwise it's perfect, as for home needs the bigger screen is better. Grrr

(Still searches for the personal holy grail of post Xmas laptop deals...)

Just placed my order for the Toshiba Pro, can't waaaaait! I'm using it as a desktop replacement, won't be leaving the house so the bigger screen is just a bonus. Still can't get over how good a deal it was! Hope my 100 quid cashback from Toshiba goes smoothly!!

Just ordered one! ;) Worked out at €700 after delivery and credit-card fee (1.5%). Couldn't find anything in Ireland to match those specs for that price.

If you want something cheaper they've similar Lenovo laptops on that site with a slightly slower processor... they're a good bit cheaper so was tempted for a while.

First time using saveonlaptops.co.uk , other boardsies seem to have used it without probloems, I'll let you know when it arrives.

Bank of Ireland rang this morning to say "Box Limited" (who run saveonlaptops.co.uk) were doing something strange checking out our account through google (??).... they froze the credit card and had to confirm that I was buying something from this company.

Anyway, they've given something to DPD and it's on its way, hopefully a laptop!

Are that saveonlaptops crowd good with sending to Ireland? They dont seem to have an option to send outside of the UK?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭joeKel73

Yeah they were perfect, ordered on Wednesday and they handed to DPD the next day. DPD was slow because of the New Year holidays.

They ship to Ireland... they seem to think it's in the UK. / :D (Infuriating yet helpful)

Just put Ireland as your postcode, shipping is ~£9 and there's a 1.5% credit card fee too, or non with Visa Debit.

Their prices are great! Much lower than anything I've seen locally.

I bought An Asus from them great service and prices! V quick delivery.

One tip make sure your credit card payment goes through, check the emails straight away. I noticed mine was halted for security check as I was purchasing from outside the UK. I gave them a quick call and they processed the payment straight away.

Hi, just wondering , are you happy with your new laptop and what about the glossy screen, some think it is an issue?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭joeKel73

    In what way an issue?

Yeah delighted with it. The screen is great, good vivid colours. The glossy outer lid is a bit of a fingerprint magnet if that bothers you.

I wiped it and installed Windows 7 Pro when I got it, and noticed the text on screen was very blurry/fuzzy. Was annoyed at that until I realised the reset had installed a bog standard display driver, downloaded the proper Geforce driver and everything is crisp now... worth noting if you're doing something similar!

Reinstalled the veriface software, handy - it logs you in automatically if it recognises you..nice gimick! :p

Ricman stated "glossy screen, thats bad for movies and web use",

I know no more than that, if OK then I will get as the specs are good for the price. Do you know if I can use the windows 7 home premium on the laptop and on my PC or do need to buy another windows 7?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭joeKel73

You meant to install the version that comes with it onto your home PC? Well you're not meant to, it's a manufacturer license that's only meant for that laptop (had thread about this recently). Don't know if it would work.

The laptop doesn't come with any CDs or DVDs at all, everything is preinstalled and they suggest you create your own rescue DVD and use that for reinstalling windows later if you need to.

i like pretty much all specs except not sure about the graphics card

P.S: that toshiba is nice but the screen is way too big + it is 3Gb Ram, i had a laptop that size for 4 years and not going there again

That does seem too good to be true, perhaps someone can find somthing is wrong otherwise best deal in the planet!

    look at this link: http://electronicsscams.co.cc/2010/09/godgif-com/
probably too good to be true, it is worrying that there are no national agencies (like police) that can shut down such ops, looks like they only take a bank transfer DODGY!

I ordered this one on 29th dec, arrived on Wednesday. Excellent machine! I checked about claiming back the 100 quid and I have to wait 30 days. The I can go onto the cash back website and fill in some details and a form I send to toshiba with invoice, etc. then they send me a check (hopefully!!) Anyway, really happy with it. Its very big tho 17.3 inch, fine for me because its a desktop replacement for me but you wouldn't want to be carrying it around much.

it seems to be same weight as all the rest 15.6z that i was looking at so shouldn't be much problem, plus I have had 17inch 3.5kg laptop for 4 years and I'm kinda used to it at this stage)) placing the order now, can't w8

Hey lads, wondering if ye can give me advice.

The Toshiba Satellite Pro L670-14P is going class for me except 2 things:

1 - I tried plugging in headphones last night but the plug only went in half way. It was a PC headset with mic. I tried the mic plug in the mic socket and same thing. Windows would recognise the headphones/mic were being connected by pop up message but would then lose connection. I don't want to push it in any more in case I damage the inlet. This is the 1st time I tried to use headphones on this. I used to work in tech support for Vaio and if someone reported this issue, it would usually be caused by user damage. I only have it a week. I don't want to send it back for repair and definitely don't want to be accused of damaging it!

    2. I tried to register with Toshiba but they said the computer was issued over a year ago so I need to fax them my invoice to proove the date of purchase.

Has anyone here dealt with Toshiba? Any good? Also, any experts can give any advice on the headphone issue?

    Thanks lads!

hey sheehy83, did your check arrive? I'm having problems to register my laptop to validate insurance, didn't try with cashback yet but kinda getting worried now. I got the same machine like yours, love it))

P.S I'm using my headphones right now, yes you are right, I was surprised myself)) just give it a bit more force (usually you are not suppose to but this is a special case)

Hey man, ya I had probs registering as well, it said my machine was outside the warranty date so I called em. Got through quick enough and the guy was very helpful. He registered me and told me that with these models you have to force the headphone plug in, all sorted now thank God! in google, type in toshiba cash back and go to their official site. I entered my details but it says I have to apply for it 30 days after purchase which is next week for me, will be doing as soon as I can! Love it as well, super machine!!!! I'll let you know how I get on with the cash back, you do the same! Happy computing!!
