Well it was going to happen someday, but today of all days, my 1976 David Brown finally said "No".
I started it OK but it sounded terrible. There was air coming out the air intake. I let it tick over for a few minutes, thinking it was a stuck valve or something that would be ok when heated up. It was bitter cold last night, -12C I think. I took off the rocker arm cover on the top of the engine and the top of the push rod was off the rocker arm on the very front cylinder. I opened up the valve clearance adjuster and put back in the rocker arm. Turned over the engine slightly, without starting and had a look again. Now the pushrod is gone down completely.

    Is it completely goosed!
What's involved in replacing the pushrod?
    Have I ruined the crankshaft.

Oh ya, and Happy Christmass to everyone.

    Happy christmas to you too.

I'm thinking that maybe a valve stem for the inlet valve has broken? But I'm not 1oo% sure. Don't try and start it as the head of the valve will be down on top of the piston in the cylinder. You won't really know until you open off the head, not advisable unless you know what you are doing, you will need to find out the correct sequence to open the bolts.

Do the springs look ok when you got the rocker cover off? The valve might have simply stuck with a piece of ice, causing the push rod to break, unlikely though? I presume you had anti-freeze in?

    Sorry I'm not much help.

as stated you will have to lift the head to find out,

thought you couldn't kill that engine, we had a 996 drove it into the ground and the engine was still as sweet as day1

easiest tractor for it's size on diesel by far.

think your'e in Clare. if you need help sourcing parts I may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks guys. Ya, I know where to get parts in Clare. I've 2 well worn paths at this stage.:D

The engine was really cold when I started it, so that must have had something to do with it. There was anti-freezein it and it was flowing after starting. I checked. Just hope I havent smashed the crankshaft.

Don't fancy going at this one, might leave that to the mechanic. I'd normally have a go at these kind of jobs, but draw the line at tough engine ones like these. It's gets to a point where a newer tractor might be in order. It doesn't owe us anything at this stage.
