What is meant when ATC call equipment, for example, a 'Heavy Triple-7' ? I know triple-7 refers to equipment type, but cant find what's meant when the reference includes the word 'heavy'? Does it mean fully loaded, i.e. souls and cargo, or equipment that has exceeded MTOW?

Thanks all guys for the replies, much appreciated! I had googled but it returned non relevant data.

I actually found it later on today while crawling:
    'Light' e.g. Cessna's
    'Medium' e.g. a320
    'Heavy' e.g. a340, 777, 747, a380*

*I sat on the a380 and Concorde 001 last month at Airbus Industrie in Toulouse, amazing experience. You should see the Telemetry Room... inspiring

A380's WTC is J, (Super). Call up the KJFK feed from Liveatc any time and you will always hear Super being appended to the A380's.

CaptainSkidmark: yes you can, it costs eur18, you can do in English or French and can book online at www.taxiway.fr (the official Airbus Tour Group). I promise, it's a tour you'll never forget :)

To make it an extra special trip, you should fly to Carcassonne stay there and take the TGV to Toulouse Centrale Gare (Costs about eur24 return on TGV, 35 min trip each way). It's an amazing piece of equipment in itself.... 24k bhp, max speed 320mph. They've electrified the track itself with 31kw to compensate friction...absolutely amazing :))

When an aircraft is referred to as a heavy it is referring to the wake turbulence category. The bigger and heavier an aircraft is, the more turbulence it creates. The vortices that are rolling off the wing tips is such that a medium type aircraft like a B738 or an A321 needs extra spacing behind it. A light aircraft like a C152 or a PA23 (Aztec) or suchlike needs even more space. This applies to arrivals and departures. The wing tip vortices from a heavy could make a light aircraft uncontrollable and could even flip it upside down.
The triple part of it would I think refer to the number of engines the aircraft had. A heavy triple would therefore mean something like a DC10 or MD11.
I hope this is some help.
