    Hi

We've been having problems starting our 7610 these last few days - it'll only start after ~ 20 minutes connected to a neighbour's tractor. I've checked the alternator and it's delivering ~ 14.5V and this morning after a few tries at starting it, the battery was still at 12.8V so it doesn't seem to be a battery / alternator problems.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Just one other thing - once started and running for a while, the engine can be stopped and re-started without a problem.

I was thinking maybe a problem with the glow plugs? Have never replaced these on a tractor, are they handy enough to do?

    Thanks

Dont think there is a heater plug on those engines, they have an excess fuel button on the injector pump, check how much power you have at the starter, all well having a good battery but you could loose power between it and the starter but my bet is that its poor compression is your problem, engine that age and all that.

When you're trying to start it does it turn over strong or is there a lazy sound to it trying...
If it's swinging good and strong then it may be compression problems...

IF you're seeing plenty of power at the battery and it sounds lazy it could be a bad connection or a lzay starter...

After trying for a few minutes put your hand round all the connections, battery poles, where the power goes to the starter and where the earth is on the frame.. If there is any heat in the connection this is where to start as this is a sign of resistance and power loss given off as heat..

If the starter is easy to access try putting the jumpleads onto the positive pole there rather than onto the battery and earth the jumpleads somewhere other than the battery... If it starts easier that way then you may have connection/leads issues...

Our 5610 is the same since the cold spell started. New battery fitted recently. Definately compression issues as the excess fuel button on the pump has to be used even in the summer when its warm.
Uncle's 7610 was the same until he reconditioned the engine. Starts on the button without the excess fuel button unless in the extreme cold as of late. Have to use it then.

roughly how much does it cost to recondition an engine like that?

throw a dart at a board. ring martin howley in glaway 091 635217. he is very good with these engines. and isn't hard on the wallet.

sounds to me like a wiring issue.
