Family car - Ideas?

My brother and his fiance have a baby on the way and will probably have another in a few years, so they're looking for a family car with €4500 to spend. Petrol only (1.6 max, maaaybe 1.8 at a real push), I accidentally put them off the diesels with talk of DPFs, DMFs, injectors and whatnot :( They're upgrading from a '99 Corsa.

They're looking for reliability, space for kids and reasonable looks. Their first choice so far was a Scenic Dynamique. Next was the Passat B6. Then came the last Vectra and a load of SEATs. My choices so far are the Accord, CMax, Mondeo, Focus, Avensis, Multipla (hah!), Grande Punto and that's all I can think of for the moment.

    Any ideas?

You would get a well sorted Rover 75......or any of the Rover range.

Not everyones cup of tea but might be worth a look. The 45 would be more reliable and cheaper to repair.

Predictably I'm going to go for the hatchback Mondeo. Big comfortable car and lovely to drive. Even the basic 1.8LX has a reasonable amount of poke and spec.

Low mileage Mk3 Mondeos to be had well within budget.

They won't go for a 75 (or any Rover) - that's reserved for me :D

The 1.6 FSI petrol B6 Passat is seriously under-powered, btw.

The 1.4 TSI is supposed to be better.

    +1

Rock solid car, cheap to run and maintain and a dime a dozen in the second hand market at the moment.. very comfy to drive as rcdk1 said, huge boot for all the extras that come with every child, babyseat, pram, bags of nappies/bottles etc..

They will get a 04/05 Mazda 6 1.8 for that money. They are a very good car for the money, nice looks for the time and reliable, drove one 1800 miles in 4days across mixed roads and it was nice to drive, good chassis too.
Smallest engine is 1.8 dont go for the diesel as they are a time bomb, petrol is very good tho.
