    Hi guys

Considering two Lenovo laptops for myself at the minute.
    here http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=MMES600PK4

    and

    here: http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=MMES600PK5

The first one has a Pentium CPU, DOS 2000 O/S whatever that is and 320gb hard disk. The second one has a Core 2 Duo CPU, Windows 7 Pro but only a 250gb disk, in all other ways they are the same machine. I don't mind putting XP on the cheaper one, and the bigger hard disk would be nice. I'm just concerned about the performance hit I'd take for buying a pentium rather core 2 duo machine. Anyone care to comment?

    Thanks

The cheaper one is ten per cent, .2ghz,, slower, ie both are dual core .
one 2.0ghz , one 2.20ghz, its unlikely you could tell the difference ,unless you are playing games on it,or doing 3d graphical design modeling .
Get the cheapest one, the hardrive is bigger. They have identical main board chipsets. For movies, web browsing theres no difference.

thanks ricman. I think the 2GHz in the elara description is wrong. The processor is a pentium T4500 which is clocked @2.3GHz so in terms of raw number crunching speed the pentium would win. However, the pentium also only has half the L2 cache that the C2D has. Perhaps this isnt a big issue though!

    Pentium Processors are completely inferior.

    DOS 2000 is... Jurassic Park:

Meaning they didn't even put Linux on it. If you want Windows you have to buy it additionally.

Basically the cheaper one is a rip-off. Don't buy. And the other doesnt seem like its worthy of the price point either. I'd have at least hoped to see 4gb of RAM, and the Graphics chip is 30 months old and low-powered: not the kind of thing I'd want to have for running 3D or HD applications, yet is reportedly capable of 1080p video.

Whatever the spec says, DOS 2000 is incorrect and the OS is probably Windows 7. Of the 2, #1 is the one to go for IMHO.

You want to bet 200 euro on that?

No need for anyone to bet on anything. The OP can just e-mail Elara and query it. Although now that you mention it, the NSLBSUK product code even on other sites does only ever mention DOS 2000. Other variants of the SL510 that have Windows 7 have different manufacturer codes. Oops.

Examples of a Windows 7 version are here (€6 extra) and here (€26 extra inc. 3-year warranty).

Sure. Bear in mind it could actually be DOS 2000, released in 1998 by IBM. Its absurd to conclude that it has Windows 7 when its not stated as such. Why not conclude then that its win2k, or xp? Rather, I choose to believe they say DOS 2000 and mean it.

Almost all new laptops have Windows 7 preinstalled. The same spec model with Windows 7 can be had for pretty much the same price. Also the Elara title says T4500 while the specifications say T4200. That's why it all just sounds odd.

The more expensive model has windows 7 Professional, it has bluetooth, and the processor is much better in my opinion.
But it's 200 yoyos more expensive and has a smaller hard drive...
But 250 gigs would hold all your p0rn lol, and 2 gigs of ram is usually well enough as long as you have a good processor.
The cheeper one seems like a false economy

If you just wanna browse the web ,watch movies, play music the cheaper one is fine, its like cars ,just cos bmws are more expensive, does that mean everyone must buy 1, there s nothing wrong with buying a ford focus.
