Please help - my tv just blew and Santa is bringing a Wii for Christmas for my 8yr old:eek::eek::eek:

It's a samsung - about 3yrs old - not a flat screen, though flat at the front and a long skinny back on it (looks like a flat screen from the front). I was watching a programme, heard a tiny noise, the screen went blank and all you can hear is a 'hissing' noise from the back!!!! I've turned it off and turned back on again a few times, just get a blank screen and that hissing noise...

Is it worth my while trying to get someone to repair it??? And if so, who? Are there still tv repair companies out there? Haven't a penny to buy a new tv...what am I gonna do:(:(

Or it could be one of those Samsung SlimFit CRT televisions. If it's the Slimfit, it could be capacitor failure, though I can't help but think it's the FBT that's gone wallop.

If it's a RPTV, like MacGyver mentioned, then a bulb would be the most likely cause.

If you have no joy with getting it fixed - you can claim part of the replacement on your household insurance.

I had to do that a while back when the CRT telly finally gave up the ghost, I contacted the insurance company and they told me to get a quote for a replacement. Since there were no CRT's available anymore and the new LCD's and plasma's is all you could get in the shops so I put a quote in for one of them.
They said that I needed a quote 'like for like'.
So I put a quote in for €100,000,000.
Naturally the insurance company contacted me to ask why I put in such a large quote and I told them I estimated the cost of shutting down production in Samsung, retooling for CRT, retraining of staff and building me one new telly.
They settled for the 42" LCD.

    Hi All,

thanks for replies and sorry I haven't been back - I borrowed a tv over xmas so the emergency passed slightly.

    This is my tv

    http://catalog.ebay.co.uk/Samsung-WS-32Z306V-32-CRT-Television-/69496073/r.html

Like I said, when you plug it on, you hear a sizzle at the back...the screen stays black. I've googled a few local tv repair companies - some of whom say they will come out to your house and collect it. I'm a bit reluctant to hand it over to a bloke at the door though - the 'companies' seem to be a bloke fixing tvs in his garage!

Any thoughts - was thinking of trying to get the money together for a new one in the sales, but to be honest, funds are very tight at the mo:( Thanks again.

Btw, it's not a flat screen, though it looks like on in that pic...has a long, skinny back on it.

This is one of the best posts I have ever seen in my life

Agreed. I have one of that type.Best TV in the business IMHO. To the OP, Power City used to sell those. I got mine in 2007, I think. Had start-up problems, and PCity took it back twice at their expense. The very helpful lady in PCity explained that they would send it to the Irish Repair Agents for Samsung. It eventually came back fully fixed and has worked a treat since. So, OP, PCity might be a way out for you. Expect to pay, though.

Yep, I bought it in Power City about 3.5yrs ago...will I go down and ask them if they can give me contact details etc??

My REAL question here - to those of you who know your tellies...is am I better off trying to spend about 400 on a flatscreen in the sales????? I don't have it...but no doubt, I could find it somewhere...:(
thanks alot guys, I really appreciate this advice.

you are going to spend the guts of 200 euro getting it repaired. there is no repair company that will fix it in your house.they all mostly employ lads to pick up tvs. They are repaired in bulk in a workshop somewhere.usually a turnaround of a week or so.if its anything other than a bulb you might end up paying a call out charge just to be told the spare part required is not available.
my advice is to cut you losses and pick up a 32 inch lcd in sales.I have contacts in tv repair industry so i know what goes on

I don't know if he's still there but there was a great TV repair shop in Rathfarnham a few years ago where I got my Philips CRT TV repaired a couple of times before it finally gave up the ghost. He's a real old school repair guy who does everything himself, repairing at component level if possible, no sending it off to some anonymous repair centre somewhere where they'll just swap complete boards until it works, and he'll be honest with you and tell you if you're wasting your time or not.

It begs the question is anything made to last anymore. I bought 3 Samsung LCD TV`s 2 years ago. The sound has gone crap on two of them lately.

I have a Samsung american fridge and that has broken down 5 times..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,775 ✭✭✭Fittle

I don't think they are corkie - even laptops and phones don't last anymore!

Thanks alot for the advice guys - I decided to nothing about it in the end - pointless spending 200 to get it fixed (if it can be fixed) when I can get a new one for a couple of hundred more. I'll bring it with me for recycling when I get the few bob together to get a new one...thanks again, much appreciated:)

I was talking to a relative recently. We were talking about white goods etc. His advice was not to pay any money for an extended warranty when you but goods such as TVs, washing machines etc.. The reason, he said, is that you rights are already covered by the 'Sales of Goods and Services Act'. Apparently these goods must last for a REASONABLE amount of time. And the term 'reasonable' can be determined by a judge. And there is no-way that it is 'reasonable' for a TV to pack up after 3 years.

So you should contact you Citiznes Advice Bureau. They go back to the shop and demand you rights. Don't listen to thier argument re. a 12 month warranty. If you don't get any joy then put in a claim in the Small Claims Court.
