Empty it if you can or if it is a lot of hassle to get water put it under cover and insulate it as best you can. Last january I emptied a tank, but closed off the tap after emptying, the dregs froze in the tap and burst the side wall of the tap.

Metal is one of the best conductors of heat so it will cool down very quickly and freeze.

If you could cover it with straw, it might keep it warm.

Might be safer to empy it altogether. Better be safe than sorry!
You could have a big block of ice on your hands. Or worst a split tank!

how are ye managing to free up frozen pumps on tankers? we poured water on it and was useless so then shoved straw in around the pump and lit it on fire and it worked brilliantly.. no meal feeding either so put the pipe into the manger and the back of the shed, opened the flaps and all cattle had water with no buckets, pity the cow shed isnt as handy

anyway happy christmas to everyone, im hoping santa brings the remainder of the SFP :D

Was talking to a relative christmas eve that told me his neighbour had forgotten to drain the water out of his roller........... it bend it into an oval before bursting out the ends!

I'm sure if you left a slurry FULL with water it'd do the same thing! Prob be ok if you only half full it, but you still have the problem of trying to get it out if it froze!

Hopefully, with the thaw starting all these problems and extra hassle are behind us (until next year at least)!

The uncle-in-law has a readymix plant. One of his two metal storage tanks for the water (old oil lorry), burst with the freeze.

So I suppose it's safe to say that slurry tanker of water would suffer the same fath

From talking to council workers he reckons alot of towns and group water schemes have cracked concrete water towers/reseviours.

Lets hope we don't get a freexe as bad for a while. Nobody really has escaped it's affects.
