1st Weatherfield, now Athlone

    Gas Explosion in the centre of Athlone town
    The Centre of Athlone is being evacuated following an explosion.

    Gardaí believe it may have been a gas blast.

    The incident occured at Mardyke street in the Irishtown area of the county Westmeath town.

    Two premises are on fire and emergency services are at the scene.

    Motorists and Pedestrians are advised to avoid the area.

    Traffic diversions are in place at the Crescent Junction, Supermacs, the Dunnes Stores Roundabout in Irish town and Northgate street.

    There are no reports of any injuries.

    How can so many of you make a joke and laugh about such a tragic incident. A young infant will now have to grow up without a mother while a man who died in the explosion leaves behind a wife and two young children. The tasteless comments some of you have posted make me sick.
