lads, I've noticed after a quick look at carzone that there is a lot of RR sports for sale. Are they trouble ?

I know from having test driven one before that they aint quick and not particularly roomy for such a big yoke but with an expanding family .......

Anyway - any reason why there is so many for sale all of a sudden.

Escalating price of petrol & diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭ArphaRima

I second the sentiments above. Many people I saw with them should never have bought one as they should never have been able to afford one. Cheap credit evaporated, so did the cars.

This is as a fan of healthy capitalism too; not a begrudger.

Drug dealers out of business due to the negative image they are getting around RTE?

There's a guy in work with the V8 Supercharged petrol one (2006) & he has been hit with a few big bills recently. Something related to the anti-roll bar has broke, €1,000 for the part & the body has to come off to fit it. Guys in the dealer have to watch a video of how it's done as they have never had to do it before. Imagine the labour that will be charged for that job!

A buddy has a 2007 one, it has had 2 x fuel pumps, 2 x auto gearboxes, a steering rack, something done with the brakes on 3 occasions & a set of alloy wheels swapped out under warranty. The yoke hadn't even done 80k kms.
It is for sale if you're interested.
My cousin has the V8 Suoercharged one in NY, man what a noise out of it but I found the back seat very cramped & uncomfortable. Nice looking jeep too & can be optioned up very well. But there has to be something better for the money.

Lot of hassle to put up with for "the badge"...

If you want a LR, go for the new Disco, but only if you are not paying for the bills and get shot of it before the warrantee expires. Wonder when LR is going to introduce a 5 or 7 year warrantee...;)

Friend of mine bought a year old one of these for around 70k two years back !!Hiis one is also for sale, if he had the 70k back he could now buy a little house with it !! Overpriced toys

How they pass those junkers off as robust cars I'll never know. I worked in the Middle East for a while and they openly mocked LR. Landcruisers and Nissan Patrols were the only weapon of choice.

    c. 27 grand for an 06 I' guess based on what I sold mine for but you'd need 5 grand in the bank as stand by for repairs and keep that topped up.
They're horrendous on the pocket. You get a terrible time on the roads too when you're behind the wheel in one. Not to mention road tax....

There are people in this country would swear Toyota are good cars!

Don't believe half of what you read, and any of what you hear.

LandRover are like Ford, their problems are amplified and publicised, yet they are not much different to most other manufacturers.

Look at Mercedes, for example? Their Mk 1 M-class? Worse than anything ever to come from LandRover. Yet LandRover are the ones pilloried.

Current Landcruisers, for example, are nothing to write home about. There have been at least two recalls, one an engine killer, if not caught, yet not publicised.

I agree, don't go just on what you hear/read, but objective evidence would suggest Land Rover are far less reliable than Toyota. They come bottom of this list compiled by UK Warranty Direct.

Most people who know about cars would not recommend this Land Rover.

It's been common knowledge for years that despite the Defenders ability off road anyone who really depends on their car buys a Land Cruiser or Patrol - the LR are just not reliable.

However I thought that was just in the wilds, and that well cared for town cars were ok.

I am always the first to say that I don't particularly care for reliability once the car does everything else for me - however the RR sport seems to not do much for me ( bar my ego ) and is also appallingly unreliable - nuff said.

If I can stomach the fuel bills I would love a Cayenne also. It certainly would tick a lot more of the boxes for me than just my desire to look good. If its a better build car that may be an option.

    thanks lads.

I just can't warm to the looks of a Cayenne. Am sure it's fun to drive though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Yawlboy

RRS is a more expensive less practical Discovery - 5 seats, sharper handling (really needed on a 2 1/2 ton 4x4) and a sloping dash are the only real differences between them.

A real Range Rover is a much better buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,706 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

I really can't understand why anyone would want a RR sport? If you want something quick & upmarket get a big engined e-class/5 series/jag. If you want a proper 4x4 just get the standard rangerover. A RR sport isn't particularly good at anything it seems. Also a standard RR has a look of class about it, can't say the same for the sport.

Each to their own but i never understood the fascination.

Everybody wanted one 4 or 5 years ago :)

Now they've completely gone out of fashion and that's why there's so many for sale and why they're so cheap. @OP - they're a good looking car but not as reliable as some say. If your mileage isn't too high and you can bear the ugliness, I'd go for the Cayenne turbo instead. Much better car in every respect.

brother in law had a Cayenne Turbo - never one to ( need to ) complain about running costs, he claimed its the first car he owned that he thought would break him. He had it 2 years ( bought 1 yo ) - servicing, tyres and petrol costs paled in comparison to the near 50k he lost in depreciation !

I would love it - and having driven it can certainly see the attraction, its a monument to Porsches engineering brilliance.

I really want a Cayenne S - the RR Sport was a make do because of the more frugal diesel.

Just to answer some other posts -

Wife won't have a full blown RR - its just too big for her to manage and having seen her try to get into one I would hurt myself laughing at the site of it again. 2ndly I think the Sport handles much more car like, I couldn't do with the ear bashing I get every time the RR almost capsizes when I drive it spiritedly.

I've had 36 odd cars of all shapes and sizes - luckily bar a Puma I bought new, I never buy them when they are fashionable - it saves a penny or two!

They are the ultimate fur coat and no knickers car. When everyone was making a few quid a couple of years ago they were the car to be seen in(thanks to celebs/footballers)
Now the bubble is burst, hardly anyone who had one had any reserves to actually maintain them, as a result you will rarely see one with a proper service history or premium tyres fitted. The main reason they are deemed as unreliable is that they require a lot of specialist and expensive maintenance which most owners won't pay for(and some dealer can't even do) and so the systems go faulty.

As proof of this the vast majority of RRS's are converted to commercial so they could be bought and taxed cheaply. Unfortunately this didn't make then any cheaper to maintain

Also recently is has become impossible to tax a commercial 4x4 unless you are actually a registered company, so that loophole has also been closed to all the posers..

Don't they have the same 2.7 diesel that's in the Disco, a friend has one of them, had the bits of swarf in the fuel system issue with his. Sorted under warranty, out of warranty now and it's behaving itself but he's a tad uneasy with it.

I've driven the Cayenne S - a 2008 model and would put it in the top 3 worst cars I've driven. It looks awful inside & outside, the materials are poor, the HMI is unintuitive, the engine makes a superb noise but ultimately it just isnt that quick, the ride is way too firm, the refinement is shocking for a luxury vehicle, it drinks juice, it depreciates like a brick.......I could go on!

I just think a huge 4x4 is never going to be a sports car, so either buy a 911 or a Range Rover......or both :p

Think also that LR Ireland pre-regged heaps of them this year earlier on in the year. Could only be up for sale now.

Black RRS seemed to be construction directors vehicle of choice and showed complete lack of taste

The RRS is on the same chassis and transmission as the Disco 3/4 (built on the same assembly line), anyone who knows what they are buying LR wise would either buy a full fat Rangie or a Disco, RRS is for pimps, overpaid footballers and drug pushers :D

Nah none of those have ever bought a RRS. Too cheap and not vulgar enough. The lot of those love their full fat Range Rovers though, in particular the ones pimped up by the likes of Overfinch / Kahn :D

There is but it's basically the same T5 platform, same production line and it doesn't matter what order they go down it, amazing to watch.

BTW Unkel, that is a Sport ;)

I agree though, some people have a lot more money than sense, or did, Overfinch are no more.

I've heard plenty of stories about that production line and they stand up in light of the build quality.

bought a 05 Range Rover Sport 2.7 HSE with 22k miles and full Land Rover History just before xmas, to be honest it is mint, drives like a new one, and was never abused (never driven ),although I am fully aware they can let you down.
Just reading through the manuals gives and idea of how complex the they are.

Only reason I bought it it looked like it came out of a showroom, and I did some backround checks on the guy sellin it, also handled itself well in the snow and ice, rwd BMW which I still have but frightened the sh1t out of me (and my family) a number of times.

It is due a service and I am going to get that done ASAP (€€€€€)

I think its generally agreed that you dont pay for one new with your own cash & you dont have one out of warranty if you are paying the bills with own cash so that leaves a F all market now whether it be new or second hand

They have to be one of the most vulgar cars on our roads.
I realy would be embarrassed to drive one.
    They have zero class....zero!!!
    Even worse in white.
In my opinion the tastefull alternative to a Range Rover is a Landcruiser Amazon.
The only classy Land Rover is the Defender
